Shifting while pulling

I was talking to a guy about pulling the other day and he was talking about when he used to sled pull a while ago he would shift his pickup (a manual) while pulling.

Does anyone do this because I would think it would be really hard on the tranny, maybe if it was a built auto I could see but most the higher horse sled pullers only run one speed trannies any way right?

on ethe guys that tractor pulled against us was fast enough he could shift his trctor going down the track, so I'm sure it's possible in a truck, but it would be hard on the entire driveline.

Wow...

Shifting a manual transmission vehicle while pulling is not something that is ever suggested.

Some tractors have shift-on-the-fly transmissions (Deere) or shiftable torque amplifier (IH) but to actually change gears in a "normal" manual trans is crazy.

If you decide to try it, I'm sure your u-joint sales person will be very happy about that.

Terrible idea...everytime I see some joker try it on the track it kills his pull.
