The course will vary by state. So check your local state laws and ask those that have gone through it in Utah. But it is a common sense course, some states require live fire, some don't. It isn't difficult if you pay attention. After you get your permit, just remember it isn't a magic pass, practice, practice, practice!!
Edit, I see you are military, so I am probably preaching to the choir. Here is a great forum you may find helpful. www.defensivecarry.com |

If you have ever been to a public shooting range you would understand how easily this could happen. I am so glad that I can shoot on my property. Back when I went to public ranges I had countless live firearms pointed directly at me by knuckle heads who needed to learn some safe gun handling skills. Needless to say many got a quick lesson from me. I am a gun safety nut!!!

When I got mine (in Michigan though of course) the whole thing took about 9 hours. There was 4 hours of classroom time dedicated to the legal aspects of carrying, 4 hours of classroom time teaching you how to stay out of bad situations and what to do if you get in them, and a 20 question test. Then you had to shoot 100 rounds at a 8.5x11 piece of paper at 17 feet in different positions. I ended up shooting about 20 rounds because I had about a 3" group and the instructor didn't want to waste any time "teaching" me to shoot. All in all it was very easy. You should have no problem!
