It think the cosmetics are secondary. They just wanna see if this Scorpion will be reliable and solid. If they are also testing the supposed 6 speed, the need a solid platform like the SD to test it.
The reason a new engine so soon is that Ford and Navistar are on the outs and Ford wants to break those ties soon...
