What determines which smilies show up on the right side when posting? Sometimes my favorite are there and sometimes I have to go get it from the BIG list.

I think it is completely random. My favorites I can just type so I really don't think about it much though.

LOL! Sometimes I see folks from the ORG commenting on FaceBook status updates and use the smilie notation.

kinda off topic , but the other night my wife and i were comparing smiles between our favorite forums, the .org had her forum beat by about 10 choices and quite a few of them made her laugh !
