I carry mostly straps but i still have a 20' length of chain as well as some short ones like someone said earlier. I also keep clevises and a couple of snatch blocks for my winch in the back too. Like a rolling recovery truck. Amazing how many times i have used most of it too. People are like "why do you have that" but they are usually glad i do.

I use the straps, but thats just cause I dont feel like dealing with the chains. I always keep 2 40ft 3in wide straps in my toolbox

i prefer straps, but i carry both when i head to the trails. in my opinion the best recovery strap can be found at Cabelas web sight, they call it a snatch strap. its good for 30k and has a good about of stretch built into it. for those jerking recoveries.. ;] pull as hard as you want and it doesn't shock load your rig. it kinda works like a rubber band.

i will never trust a chain for anything... even my winch line is synthetic rope... a 3" strap will hold more weight than a greade 8 chain.... its amazing what some oil and some chemical reactions can make.... synthetic is the only route to go... plus if cable or chain snap they are doing some damage.... if a strap or synthetic line snaps it drops limp spareing injury or damage

I carry around a Master Pull Recovery set. It contains a 26,500 synthetic winch rope extension, 30,000 swing block, 33,000 Super-yanker synthetic tow rope, 62,700 shackles, rockguards and a couple 12 foot chains.

Straps. I have 2 x 3'' straps, and a couple smaller ones for securing loads.
