oil syn vs. conv.
For me it just makes sense to go with the conventional oil. I have regular mainanence to do on my lawn equipment. So I do it all at the same time. Then take my fluids down to Super Lube. I have the advantage of doing it at work while I'm being paid by someone else. I feel like others about the thing if you're not faithful with the 3-5k change you should probably go with the synthetic. Marc also brings up the point of moisture. I have no worries about that. I ran a synthetic(I won't name the brand. That wouldn't be fair)in a Dodge 1500 that I had ONCE. When I went to change it at 7500 miles(it was killin' me that I'd gone that long). The stuff came out like gelled up molasses. It just sat there and plopped out for about 2 hrs. I have no idea why it did that. I changed the oil ran it for about 300 miles and changed it again. Then I traded the truck in at a stealership. I have nothing against synthetics, I have friends who use it religiously and LOVE it and have had no problems. I think my issue was a fluke. I just like the 3-5k conv. interval. So I voted conventional! |

I have been running amsoil for about 4 years, 80K miles and have been sold on it. The big seller for me was one weekend we went on an overnight snowmobile trip and the temps dropped to -40 on the thermometer. Since we were parked in a lot with no electricity I was sweating if my rig would start. Fired right up no problems. Parked right next to me was a 00 PSD and it took three times and then once it did start, until it warmed up, it sounded bad, knocking missing, smoking. For quite a while I was also getting the oil tested and always got no changes recommended. I change it every 15K miles so even though it is three times more expensive, it evens out in the end.

Without knowing the brand, I can still make a guess on what happened. Synthetics oils are very "clean" oils in that they possess a ton of cleaning additives. That is one of their big advantages is no sludge or anything can form because of the make up of the oil, and because its like dropping a bottle of crankcase flush in every oilchange. Now, I don't know the mileage or oil or service history of the 1500, sounds like you are pretty meticulous. I would guess that if it had higher mileage with a crummy conventional oil it would be safe to say you could have pulled out all the junk and sludge and stuff in the oil. This is why when converting trucks over I usually have them run a bottle of Amsoil Motor Flush first. |

My last change I tried the Rotella Syn...and I have not been impressed. I think my cranking time has actually increased.
