For towing heavy loads I would like to have the 6 speed, but based on the percentage of towing vs commuting that I do with my truck, I settled for the automatic for convenience. I haven't towed any large loads with it yet, but what work it has done I've been real satisfied with the Torqueshift. It's every bit as good as I remember the Allison to be.

My only regret is the 3.73 gears with the 20" tires. The tires bring the effective gear ratio down closer to 3.55. It's great on the highway but I know I'll regret it when I start pulling a 14k gooseneck loaded with about a 12k tractor.

Thanks!

OK...I have the ZF 6 spd, but...

I think I would be happier with the Auto...even though they are physically weaker than the manuals. It is a PITA to launch the manual without smelling the clutch. It's either bog the motor or spin my new tires. I don't like either! I would rather have the AUTO and spend the $$$ for an upgraded ATS or similar unit with an awesome converter. Just my $0.02!

I don't tow as much as I would like to and the truck is mostly a really big commuter!

I would have preferred the 6 spd for towing, etc...

BUT after too many quad crashes and not being able to drive a stick for a while.... it made more sense to buy an auto... just in case.

Same here. Love my 6spd. It would be nice to have the auto for a good launch, but all in all, love that 6spd.

I have a hybrid transmission: A little guy named Manuel sits next to me in the truck and every time I need to shift, I reach over and give him a smack. He automatically shifts to the next gear.....

I agree to a certain extent, but there ain't nothing bulletproof about a clutch. The only thing is that you can waste several clutches for the cost of an automatic rebuild.
