Finally, Drug Testing For Welfare Recipients

This is what we have all been talking about, so finally it has been brought up in Congress. I doubt it will grow very big legs, but at least it's a start.

Legislator wants welfare recipients to be subject to drug testing
June 18th, 2009 @ 10:52am

SALT LAKE CITY -- A Utah lawmaker says all people receiving federal assistance should be subject to random drug testing.

Parowan Sen. Dennis Stowell presented his idea to the Workforce Services and Community and Economic Development Interim Committee yesterday.

He said that people with jobs are subjected to such tests and so those receiving money, due to the fact they do not have jobs, should have to face them as well and lose benefits if they test positive.

Critics of the plan say it will hurt people trying to get back on their feet and cost the state money that can be better used elsewhere.

Like a state legislator EVER was concerned about wasting money. How would keeping clean from drugs hurt anyone? Well except me with an aching back from work that needs a pain or muscle relaxer fix every now and then.

EVeryone should call this man and thank him for bringing it up. Every state should look at this type of policy.

If they are on drugs they are obviously not trying to get back on their feet. If this goes through the state will have money to spend elsewhere because there will be a lot of dip chits not on welfare anymore.

'Bout damn time...

and for the critics mentioned in the original post... The only people it would hurt trying to get back on their feet is the ones doing the damn dope in the first place... If you don't do drugs you shouldn't have anything to worry about, right...

finally something i can agree with.. i think state assistance is a great thing just as long as it isnt abused.. why shouldnt they be subjected to drug testing, i have to do it to make a wage.. they should too. maybe it will help clean things up a bit...
