The real Independence Day
Well we all know that the Declaration of Independence as it stood was signed on July 4th 1776. How many people know that the Second Continental Congress adopted the Lee resolution on July 2nd 1776 which is the Declaration. And here is the text. Resolved, That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved. That being said the true day of Independence is July 2nd 1776 vice the 4th when the Declaration was signed. However I will be celebrating Independence Day on the 4th and remembering what that day is really about not just the BBQ's and Fireworks. So endth the history lesson. |
