Harley Owners

Im in the market for a new toy. Im interested in a used 1999-2005 Dyna Wide Glide or Lowrider. Im new to the Harley scene so im not quite sure what to look for as far as mileage on a used bike. Whats high? When do these bikes start having problems. ETC, anyone know of a good place to look for used bikes? Thanks for your help.

Dont now much about bikes myself, But I met a guy the other day that had a 1995 nastalgia addition softtail, that was perfect, had 6400 miles on the clock, Black and charcoal grey, said he would entertain any thing around 15k.
I didnt know if that was good or bad? Maybe someone will chime in and we will both learn something.

Jameson. The average person rides about 5000 miles per year. Unless of course you live in a warm weather state like I do that allows for year round riding. Then 8-10k mikes a year would be acceptable. When looking at used bikes you want to know a little about the person selling the bike. Are they super pickey about maintenance (like I am) or do they just let it kinda go. Either look for one that has a good bit of customizing done to it or the guy that bought it thinking he would ride it and pretty much kept it in the garage as a show piece (garage jewelry). I have a 1996 softail badboy springer that is a full blow custom for sale. I rebuilt it from the ground up. If intersted PM me with an e-mail address and I'll send you the ad for it. I build bikes off to the side as a part time income/hobbie. I love being in my garage working on stuff and rebuilding bikes ect. Everything on the softail was built with top of the line stuff. I want to sell it as I am getting ready to retire from the Marine Corps and want to get some cash together for a downpayment on a house.

ebay or your local auto trader , is a good place to look ,99-05 is the new twin cam engine and i have seen these bikes with alot of miles on them and still run fine , if ones been serviced right they last along time ,there is really not a general rule for bikes as far as mileage all depending on the person ,some people put 1000 miles on one in a year and others put 15,000 ,i been riding harleys for a long time, and its just like anything else ,you have to use common sense when going to look at one

i personally have an 03 low rider and it has 30,000 miles on it. i have done about everthing to it and i have not had a single major problem yet. normal used mileage is around 10,000 but make sure you check out maintance and condition. i would take whatever you bout to a dealership or inspector to check out for any problems.

Ive got an 01 Ultra Classic and it has about 32k on it and no mechanical problems. Problems with small stuff but runs like a beast. We even pull a trailer behind ours to some of the rallys and no sweat (except for gas mileage). I am picky about maintenance and trust only synthetics due to air cooling. I would get on mine and tour the U.S. with no worries. Just remember what ScottW said... HD stands for hundred dollar cause that's what it costs you everytime you walk out of the dealers door with any type

of goodies!!!

All of the important points have been posted earlier, but I'll chime in about the add-ons and cash. It's real, real, easy to spend several thousand dollars on bits for the bike, so part of your looking should include seeing what the prior owner added and whether you can live with that. It'll save a bunch if you can.
On miles, ask yourself how many miles you think you'll be riding each year. If it's a lot, then get a higher mileage bike and save $$. If you'll mainly be bar-hopping around town, then spending the extra on a low-miles bike will be better for re-sale.
Ask the HD forum in the link above about reliability, but there's not a lot of bikes that can't go 100,000 miles anymore if they're taken care of. If there's any doubt about how the bike you're looking at was maintained, then spend a couple dollars on an oil sample analysis. Worth it's weight in gold.
Good luck searching!
