First and foremost, you should know that in Rochester, New York, there is the National Toy Museum and Hall of Fame. Each year the museum inducts a limited number of toys to be honored based on a number of factors, but one of the key criterion is longevity… you know, a toy with staying power, not a quick fad. With that, some of the toys that have already earned a spot include Mr. Potato Head, marbles, the bicycle, Atari 2600 games and Crayola crayons. This years inductees include the skateboard, the baby doll and… the stick. Before you start racking your brain trying to remember a toy called ‘the stick’, you should know that we’re just talking about a plain old stick, a former branch, dead wood. It might sound ridiculous, but the stick, in the hands of a child is not a stick; it’s a fishing rod, an oar, a rifle, a guitar, a microphone, a telescope, a flag pole, a magic wand, or a sword. The stick isn’t the only non- toy in the Toy Hall of Fame. In 2005, the cardboard box was inducted, praised as an all- purpose, no- cost recreational tool. They’ve got a point. What kid hasn’t used a box as a lifeboat or a car or a house or whatever? And hell, sometimes sticks and boxes were better than the toys our parents bought us. Anyway, all of this leads to today’s Fantasy Question: WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE NON- TOY TOY, WHAT TOY DID YOUR PARENTS ALMOST GET RIGHT (BUT DIDN’T) AND WHAT TOY WOULD YOU NOMINATE FOR THE TOY HALL OF FAME? I would go with the cushion set we had, a cabbage patch doll that my mom had made for me, and the rubber bouncy ball. |

Hmmmmm.......I'm not sure about the other two, but I definitely agree that the bouncy ball should be in the hall of fame!
