I understand your reservations ...but the internet IS public domain.(If you lived in a small town and put a sidewalk at the front of your property, people
walking on your sidewalk would not be trespassers). The issues arrise when people access networks that are clearly restricted or posted.
If someone were to access my wireless site for access to the internet...more power to them,i really dont care. If they access my wireless to access MY computers ...then I mind, as they are deliberately bypassing my firewall.
This concern is NOT restricted to wireless,by the way.If you should do a scan of any internet subnet...you will probably find 3-5 percent of the "wired" home users with NO Firewall. It makes no differance if they are on a modem, router,or switch.
IF you can access your neighbors personal stuff by wireless,it is liklely that you can also access it thru the internet ,from anywhere in the world.
For this reason alone, it makes sense to buy an wrt54g by linksys at what are bargain basement prices. You get a wireless radio AND you get a local switch (4 or 5 port),AND you get a "hardwired firewall" ,"a network address translator",and a dhcp server(passes out non routable ip addresses) .You can turn the radio off and on as you desire or anyone one of the features ,for that matter.Last but not least.....IF you have a working network port on that pc...YOU DONT need to let vista "install it" . I would install only if using on a usb port.
IN general, most small routers are local network addressable at 192.168.1.1. or 192.168.0.1.The password scheme varies from one company to another. (Some require that you plug into a designated maintenance port.)
If I had neighbors with internet access being broadcast,I would out of courtesy mention that they're broadcasting in the neighbor hood...not unlike telling your neighbor that their front gate is open. They may not care about their front gate. Its the firewall layer that matters, wired or unwired.

The dhcp is off on my router and my Win Server 03 hands out the ip addresses. Also, I have a strong WPA-PSK password so nobody can hack in. Out where I live, there isnt any reachable networks in my neighborhood. Although I have range tested mine and estimated 400ft b4 I lose the signal.

I share dial up. Yes dial up. Its slow as he11. But thats the only available internet here besides satellite. Do a lot of file sharing and the wireless has shown its limits.

Linksys default ip is 192.168.1.1 and the password is admin
I dont know whats belkin's ip and password, but it should be similar.

Yep...theres a crapload of them out there..i dont even try to remember them any longer.Have you ever experimented with an amp and parabolic antenna setup?Pretty cool .Even without the amp,you can reach a thousand feet or more on a cheap usb client reciever in a laptop ,if the host has a good yagi or parabolic antenna.
