Use Tax?

Two years ago I decided to buy a four-wheeler, a fun play toy that would help me get some credit established. I shopped around for prices as I usually do.

The Yamaha place here in Cleveland wanted $5,200 plus tax for their Raptor 350.... I called the Yamaha place down in Fort Oglethorpe, Ga and they had one left and said they could let it go for $4000 out the door and that Georgia didn't have any sales tax!

Two and a half years later(aka yesterday)
I get some mail from the TN Department of Revenue, Discovery Division or some B.S. stating that although I had purchased the ATV in Georgia, I still owed them "use tax", 9.25% of the total purchase cost...

What kinda crock of sh*t is this? Any of y'all know about use taxes? This is the most rediculous thing I've ever heard of in my life. They're basically saying "We're going to make you pay sales tax on that...even though you didn't buy it under our jurisdiction..."

Anyone good enough with mathematics to help me write out a check to 'em like this one:

depends on the laws in your state. In flroida any atv purchased after July 1 2003 has to be titled and taxes paid regarless of where it was purchased. This is supposed to cary over to resales as well. We have a rather large problem with theives down here.

Use tax laws vary from state to state but I found this for you.

We have something very similiar here in PA but they usually won't catch you on a wheeler or snowmobile from out of state until you try to register it and then you have to prove that you paid the tax or get your wallet out.
