Insurance claims
My shop was broken in to, an a bunch of tools and equipment was stolen. I keep real good records on things I have such as manuals, serial numbers and maintenace records for oil changes and such on lawn and garden equipment.
Well to get to the point, if I hadn't I would have had a hard time proving what I had that was stolen. Well from now on I am going to keep some photographic records of all the stuff that I have. I want to record all the tools and equipment in my shop, as well as the thing in my home. With the age of the digital camera, it has made it a lot easier to record and store these records. I also want to update the record ever so often to keep it current.
So I would suggest that you guys might want to do the same before you have to deal with an insurance claim. It is real hard to remember what you had and where it was after its gone. Also you may want to consider having replacement value on you policy. I have it and it will allow me to get new tools of equal value (other wise they would depreciate it and I would not get the full amount for replacing my things).
This is just something to think about before you have a loss, you could call it preventive maintance.
