elctronics parts Q's

ok, i'm no electrical engineer so, does any one know of a web site that has a picture of what diffrent electronic parts are and what they do? like what a resistor is and what it does. what a diode is what it does. you get the idea. i got an old cobra 29 cb and "diassembled" it and now am kind wondering what all that stuff is in there and if i can use it on other things.

i dont know of a website....but i can answer those questions. If i can help you in any way with this build, let me know. i can email you a picture of the symbols on a wiring diagram and some info.....

Resistance is defined as the thing that makes current not flow efficently. current is amperage, voltage is electric pressure. this is how you can get 12 volts through a wire with high resistance. there is plenty of voltage, just no or reduced current (amperage). a resistor is a devise that is put in a particular place to either restrict electrical flow, or sometimes they are put paralell to a light bulb. the light bulb has lower resistance, and electricity always takes the easiest path. the electricity will flow through the bulb unless it burns out, then it will go through the resistor because that is the only path. there are other uses but these are the most common

a diode is a componant the basically makes electricity a "one way street". a diodes main function is to only allow electricity to flow one way. a perfect example is your altenator. it actually produces AC electricity....but a diode blocks half the current and therefore DC current is all that gets to the battery, allowing your 12volt DC truck to maintain power.

the biggest thing you need to worry about is amperage.....you cannot allow more current on a circuit than it can safely allow to flow. 10 amps on a 16 gauge wire will create enough heat to cause a fire. this is drastic, but this is what you really need to look for.........Marc

i dont plan to put the cb back together. i just wanted to see what was in side. its burnt up any way. no, i didnt do it. i'm lookin for pictures of diffrent componets and what thier commonly used for. oh and i have schematics with keys as to what the symbols mean so im okay there. thanks

resistors can take many shapes, but diodes in a circuit board are easy to spot. they are the cylendrical with round ends.....and will have colored lines around them distinguishing thier function, current direction, what amperage they blow at (kinda becoming a fuse...but not really)....and such.........Marc

i thought resistors had colored lines representing values its capable of. no? and that diodes were a solid color. the board has the diffrent places marked as to what goes where, if i understand it right. example* c20. that would be a capacitor correct? it looks like a big(er) blue can with two wires. so if right things marked with a c=capacitor, d=diode, r=resistor. but i dont know what t='s,l='s,v='s,j='s,r='s. any thought's? bt the way this aint anything serious, just playin around.

normally diodes are white or off white with colored rings(in cuircuit boards)......capacitors and resistors can take many forms, maybe even looking similar to a diode. the R or C or D are a good indication to what it is......but i have an awsome understanding of DC electricity and i couldnt fully break down any cuircuit board.........that takes a ton of hands on knoledge with them cause those are resistors, capacitors, and diodes that are used exclusivley for that purpose........Marc
