I do not know what they did, but back in AZ. we often carried spares, one long travel spare could fit muliple ends/rigs, or trail weld in some tube. I once had to be pulled up yellow hill on Pritchett Canyon due to a busted driveline, I drove backwards down part of Axle alley in 2wd until I had room to turn around (You cannot climb the sides to turn around in 2wd). You can do more in 2wd than you would think, I have seen videos of a Ford crown vic (think cop car) on both hells revenge and poison spider mesa in Moab, crazy mountain biker! search Youtube for it.
