what year did the turbo start?

What year did the turbo start showing up, and what years can be still running w/out an alt. or batt.? And what kind of power can be had from these engines (turbo or non-turbo)

i believe the turbo made it's debut in '95 also not sure on the HP, but the torque should be nice for a trail rig.

I thought the turbo came out in mid 93, seems I had a friend that had one when they first came out and at the time, it was the most amazing thing ever. Might be wrong though, that's been 14 years ago, I've done a lot of since then.

93.5 idi was the first 7.7 with a turbo,and it would run with the electrical unlike the powerstroke

I'm assuming you mean without electrical? And what that means is that i should get a 93.5 f350 to get the turbo and not a 94 and newer to be able to still drive off the trail if my alt. Fails, correct?

In '93 you could get the non turbo 7.3 and the turboed 7.3, in '94 you could still get both of these IDI engines and in mid '94 the Powerstroke was released, had your choice of three engines that year. I have an '89 7.3 with out a turbo and a '94 Factory Turbo IDI and they both run fantastic!!!! Excellent mountain engines with more low end torque than any powerstroke I have owned for idling up rough roads. Mine are extremely reliable and simple to work on and the '94 has some great power, with a new down pipe and straight pipe, new air intake and a little pump tweeking it out pulls my '08 6.4!! Yes they will run with no alt. or batt. too, I did it with the '89 last year! Excellent trail trucks in my opinion!

the 93 and 94 models had the option of an IDI engine with or without a turbo i personally have a 94 turbo diesel with 406,000 miles on it!!!! great trucks, no electrical components what so ever, only problem i have with it is the ever so lovely E4OD which im sure everyone is well aware of great engine crappy transmission. the base horsepower on a turbo engine is 190 and torque is 380 i think.
