need 83 6.9 help asap

just bought a 83 f250 6.9. got it running and now am moving to christmas valley to my new property. problem is it keeps dying. was told probly water in fuel due to sitting. the water seperator is not hooked up. also the fuel filter and base seem to be from a 7.3. i have ordered a aftermarket seperator base and filter but i need to now how to plumb it! i need it fixed by the first so i can move. and was told i really need the seperator as it is average of 40 degrees during the day and 15-25 at night on the new land! if im in wrong place im sorry but please help!!!!!!!!!!!! ty.

i also noticed that my fuel filter has a base that screws onto it. with a little drain piece. do i need to use the new base and separator filter? also the original gp controller has been replaced and not screwed in. its just hanging in the back and the bottom is broken. i have noticed that in order to ever start it i have to use ether.. ya i know. very bad. but i use VERY small amount. is this due to the controller being broke? i am ordering new controller and gp's from accurate diesel.
