7.3L IDI advancing timing and RPM gov
i am in the process of collecting and building custom parts to make a 600+ HP [hope to make more than 700! but feel unsure of the block : )] 7.3L IDI and was wondering what is the max amount of timing advance that my engine can take? the max rpm that ill be turning is 4500 only if i cant go farther, i will use a GM 5.7L diesel gov springs rated for 4400RPM's
i know what im saying is probably stupid and a waste of time and money to alot of people but i just dont care and yes the motor will go through many changes befor its even ready to be put together such as: twin ball bearing turbos(both will have separate intercoolers, head work to make it an DI or close to one, honed injectors, pump turned all the way, advanced time, very low comp. 15:1(i think it will be good enough), headstuds, new crank, high performance valves and seats, water/methanol, zex nitrous(maybe), forged every thing and i will be making my own headers as well, and i am debating whether to have a custom cam be made or to have custom rockers made to increase my intake and exhaust. but i just dont know how much advance this motor will take. any info and advice would be very appreciated. oh and since im just collecting and building a few obvious parts i have yet to dig into the motor so i do need some pics of the heads and swirl chamber lifters ect. any pics of anyting at all would be good ( cc.mudslinger@yahoo.com ) and dont expect to see this engine being complete with in the next year. im takin my time to builld this beast right! If you guys need info an how to adjust your timing of the pump i found another forum with all the info needed. i hope that this will help some of you.
How to adjust the timing on your injector pump - Powerstroke Nation and for a RPM limiter More RPMs!!! - Powerstroke Nation so if any of you like playing with the old IDIs you can have alittle bit more fun now! |

Maxing out your pump will net you 220hp at the wheels max. You will need to build a high output pump. Maybe take a Mack V-8 pump and adapt? Cat 3208 pump?
It will cost a lot to convert to DI, probably around $25,000, nobody has ever done it, custom heads would have to be made. In stock, IDI's dont like to much advance, they burn up the glow plugs and cause head gasket failure. If you eliminate the glow plugs then you can bump it up some but not like a cummins. Stock valve springs float at 4400rpm's, you will need to find others, and I would be weary of using 5.7 ones, that was a horrible motor...but they might last? You can put a rpm spring in from a 6.2 pump, good for like 4200 rpm's, but you will need to build a custom pump anyways. |

well im really not wanting to spend that much for a custom heads to be made. is there any way thta i can cut the swirlchambers to make it an di or is not enough room to do this kind of mod? ive heard that max lagold had his cut open to expose the injector not sure if its true but worth a try aint it? lol

I knew one guy who just did a port job on that little passage way. That chamber in there is to get the fuel burning, and gets it swirling around. When he did the port job it messed with that swirl and it effected performance, in a bad way. I wouldnt mess with it.
If you want lots and lots of power and dont want to spend much, I'm sorry man, but an IDI just isnt the way to go...and this is coming from a hardcore IDI guy |

7.3L IDI advancing timing and RPM gov
oh and by the way ill will buy DPS DIESEL's idi injestors and high flow racing/sled pulling IP its capable of 4x the stock IP can put out look at all their goodies!
Diesel Performance Specialists, Inc. - The Diesel Performance Specialists i already have one heck of a bill made for my project in the futur and im only building parts to lower the cost and my bill is $9493 with no turbos, tranny, transfercase, or drive line upgrades. im going to cry if i cant break 700 HP. well maybe i shuold just give up on an idi and go for the powerstroke. it would be easier and cheaper Last edited by cc.mud slinger; 07-06-2009 at 04:23 PM. |

FYI I've heard some bad thing about DPS. Customer service is really bad, products are hit and miss, ect...but they are basically the only people that sell anything that might get you into the 700hp mark.
I dont think you will get there, thats just me though. |

wow, that is one h##l of a goal! good luck.

even with your bill at 10g you could find a nice DI and have it close to the power your looking for out of this IDI and save yourself a hell of a headache. But on the other hand you would be probably the first to do something like this..... all about what you want. Good luck either way
