rear axle bearing trouble

I'm hearing a rumbling sound coming out of the rear of my F350. Definitely related to vehicle speed, sounds like a bearing, and it's slowly getting worse. I'd better get it taken care of before it fails completely and gets real expensive.

Anyone had any experience changing out the bearings on the Dana 80? Is this something one can do at home, or does it take special tools and equipment? I've overhauled the rear axle on a half ton truck, but this one is a bit larger.

You need a special socket to get the locking nut off, so you can pull the hub off. You can then drive out the bearings and replace them.

I did mine when I did the brakes. since the rotors bolt to the back of the hub, it'd be a good time to consider doing them, too. other than the special socket, easy! torque to 65 ftlbs (I think!) while rotating the hub, back off 5 clicks on the nut. all done!

I did have a problem with the seals, got the first set at autozone, they crossed ocver but are a different style, tapped them in, and the little spring around the back of the lip fell off. ended up getting a set of OEM seals from the dealer. price wasn't bad, went right in and no problems at all.
