I am having some trouble and dont know much about turbos. i have a smoke switch on my truck and last night was smoking some people at the movie the toggle switch skocked me and there was a small arc on one of the wires. after that it was like the turbo was stuck with the smoke switch off. you could barely hear the turbo at all it was just like the smoke swutch was off. so today i set my sct back to stock took the switch off and wired it all back like it suppose to be. now the whistle is back but not nearly as loud as it was. it use to sound like a jet, it was louder than the exhaust or engine. any idea what could have went wrong? and can a turbo get stopped up by the soot?

holy crap. I've never heard of this happening before. I don't have an answer but hopefully you don't have to replace your turbo.

Yes! Idling/Excessive Soot will absolutely kill a VGT turbo. Judging by your sig picture, it looks like you have an 03-04 6.0 which means you have either the 10 or 12 vane turbos. They are the easiest to have vanes stick, which will not allow the turbo to build boost, cause smoking, laggy performance, etc.

doubt it. if it shocked you and quit its electrical, prob shorted something with the solenoid on the turbo, nothing major, at worst could be solenoid, try cleaning the turbo. and soot wont KILL your turbo, itll just stick, nothing a little cleaning cant fix.

I guess I need to explain myself alittle better. It will cause the vanes to stick, not destroy the turbo.

I had the same thing happen to mine when I was having problems with it starting and long warm up periods. I would have to let the thing idle for around 20-30 minutes before I could drive it and the turbo wouldn't build boost at all. Hammered it a few times and then she finally unclogged herself and was back to normal.

yeaaupp. ive heard its good when your getting on the free way or an open road to get the egts to a grand or 12k for good 5 seconds, every once in awhile to burn everything out and keep it clean

Mine has no problems at all hitting 1300*. Highest EGT that my monitor has recorded is 1650* LOL.

These trucks need to be thrashed on every now and again in order to keep everything cleaned out IMO. They are built to be worked, so when people use them as DD's and weekend drivers, junk starts to build up.

exactly, everymotor should be blown out everyonce in awhile especially diesels. i have no clue what ive tacked out at, i hit 16k no prob, sure im hitting that or more everytime i drag an 1/8th. i never watch it to distracted

so are those aftermarket turbos that are so loud or just done up ones? what, you can just flip a switch and get bellows of smoke? that would be hillarious to do when someone is on their cell phone, ha!

Even if you don't have an 03 turbo/motor, your 2004 Turbo will only have two more vaines than the 03 so it will still give plenty of whistle!

put your sct back on it an c if your turbo is loud again? :dunno:
