Exhaust brings tears to my eyes

I just got my first diesel, a '96 powerstroke with just over 200k. I just replaced the air filters and fuel filter and changed the oil. It doesn't leak a drop. It doesn't smoke. But the exhaust stinks far worse than it should. Any ideas how to fix it?

Thanks

You may want to check your glow plugs & the glow plug relay, that may help at start up. If you are chipped you may want to turn it to the economy setting untill warm Rick

Smelly

You might want to check your cat if you have one. If you are loading up on fuel it might be clogging you cat. I would get rid of it. That year truck is not required to have one. I also have a 96 and I have 190,000 miles on it and it runs like a top. I would recommend that you put a Tymar intake let me know if you need more help with this, and I would put a turbo back 4 inch exhaust with both cat and muffler delete you will see good gains with those upgrades. This is not even with a chip or anything. Please let me know if you need anything else for your truck I have done a few things to mine , and if you need any repair help just let me know and enjoy your PSD.

Welcome to the Forum.

Mt truck would knock you off your feet before I went with 4" exhaust and high flow intake. It still smells strong in the morning, but not as bad.

Are you running a chip or tuner? When running a SCT tune on mine it seems to smell stronger, but idles better.

Thanks for all the responses

I'm not certain of the history of the vehicle, I bought it at auction from the St. Louis Fire Dept., it's a retired ambulance on an E-350 chassis. I'd imagine it's all stock.

I haven't had a problem yet with it starting up, but the exhaust seems to be the same cold or warmed up. I think I'll try gutting the cat, at the least it should improve gas mileage.
