I have a 2004 automatic 6.0. My problem is that the first time you go to start it that day, it will not go. It turns over fine has new batteries but will not fire. If you use brake cleaner to start it with it will fire right up, and will start up the rest of the day. Next morning no go. First Ford dealer I took it to after replacing about every sensor and the starter (after they burned it out) charged me 1500 dollars and said it must be the cam sensor, but would have to pull engine. BTW computer was showing no bad codes. Went to another Ford dealer and they found about 6 bad codes and said it would cost about 5000 to fix everything. I asked which thing would keep it from starting they said none. Called 3rd Ford dealer told them my problem and they said just replace glow plugs and it will start. Shouldn't truck start when it is 75 outside even with bad glow plugs? One more thing if you park it facing downhill it sometimes has a better chance of starting. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I am just getting in to this diesel thing.

Everyone is telling me to get the "cold start reflash" but I'll have to wait till Monday to find a dealership that can do it. The last one never heard of it.

That hardly makes any sense, UNLESS they are referring to the trigger wheel on the camshaft. I highly doubt this is the issue or else your engine would barely run if even at all.

Okay, either there are DTCs or there aren't. So which is it? What are the DTCs? Are they ON-DEMAND (hard faults) or CONTINUOUS MEMORY (faults set at one point, but NOT active) DTCs?

I call BULL**** on that one.

If that's the case, what's your oil level like? What kind of oil filter are you using? If it's any of the aftermarket junk oil filters (especially the ones with the "one-piece" cap), DITCH THEM and get the proper Ford/Motorcraft FL-2016 oil filter specifically intended for your application. What kind of oil are you using, and how much? I have seen more than my share of these filters causing starting issues like yours. Please post your answers to these questions first, before I respond further.

You are using BRAKE cleaner to get your truck started??

Brake cleaner to start your truck up is a good way to get yourself killed. If you get a good enough shot in there, it's a home made bomb (An expensive one).

Thank god you didn't use Ether to start it. Brake clean vaporizes quicker than ether, so count yourself lucky.
