Hello All, I just spoke to a local diesel mechanic and he says that once a month during the winter you should open the water drain valve and let it drain for a full two minutes. This seems excessive to me but he has a very big shop and does tons of business...does this sound logical? Two full minutes seems like an awfully long time to be letting fuel run out of my truck, especially every month.
From what I can remember the manual says you just have to open the fuel water drain valve when the water in fuel light comes on, and you only have to drain the fuel until clean fuel starts running out of the drain. I can't see any reason to drain it for 2 minutes every month, that would just be a total waste of diesel.
I drain mine once every 1000 miles in the cold weather and have not had a problem yet. Open the water drain and catch what comes out. The water will be separate, close the valve when you have just fuel coming out. This should only be at the most two cups if your light had been on. Usually it's only a few ounces of water with fuel after.
