HELP!!! Truck wouldn't start this morning

i am using a buddy's 97 7.3 liter. This morning I went to start the truck and it wouldn't start. Last night I noticed the fuel filter light starting to flicker on. I believe it is the battery though. It cranked for a few seconds and then stopped. I tried it again and I heard the pop sound coming from the piece that is mounted on the side near the battery on the passenger side (I think the starter cylinoid). i do have lights inside the cab so I have some battery. I tried to jump the truck with a car. I hooked to the battery on the driver's side since that is the only one I could reach. (does it matter which battery I hook up to? and is a car battery strong enough?). I waited 20 seconds and it tried to crank then the pop sound and it wouldn't do anything again. I was very late for work so I just took the car.

Is this the batteries? Or other things you suggest? Please help. I am somewhat mechanically inclined but I don't know all the parts of a diesel.

My truck is getting a water pump changed, that is why I have the buddies truck.

PS,

It was about 47 Degrees here last night (not cold but just an FYI)

Also, i remember that last night I fixed the time on his radio (the radio clock was 8 minutes slow). Could that be another sign of the batteries going?
