How Long Should Regen Last?

Hi Folks,
I recently had the latest software flash during a recent service appointment.

I now see the "cleaning exhaust filter" message on my dash when the truck goes into regen.

The funny thing is that i've only seen the message twice. The first time I just barely caught it, in less than a second after noticing it, it was gone. The other day, I saw it again, this time it lasted for 8-10 seconds after I noticed it.

I assume that the message stays on until the regen process ends. However, how long should the regen process last? With my basic understanding of the process (DPF filter gets stuffed up, so additional fuel is dumped into the cylinders to increase EGT, which heats up the DPF turning it into an incinerator to cook out the particulate) I would guess that this process would take at least a few minutes under normal conditions.

Just wondering how long others are seeing their trucks in regen, and what would / should be considered normal.

Thanks

You do have the basic understanding of it, thats for sure.........however as to how long it should last, it all depends on drive style and if its a idle or in the highway. Regen should happen anywhere from 250 to 500 miles, again depending on drive style and how fast you clog the DPF. And as to how long it should last, at idle it can be anywhere from 15 mins to 45 mins, but on the highway no more than 5 minutes max

interesting both times i've seen it i've only ben in the 30 - 50 MPH range. Not cruising at highway speeds.

I know there is a chance that both times I didn't see the message the instant it came on, but i'm a MPG freak..... I'm always looking at the MPG setting on the message center. It's pretty unlikely that that message was staring me in the face for more than a few seconds before I looked down and saw it.

the message only stays on for a few seconds and then passes. the system check will continue to tell you(if you run it) that the truck is in regen. Because they do not regen at idle anymore, they are supposed to last up to 20 minutes on the highway. It will regen anytime above 30mph.

i have a 09 250 and mine was on for 45 min and sucked 1/4 tank of fuel. that was driving 60mph. it better not take that much fuel everytime or else im gonna have to be at the fuel pump when it flashes the message.

Hey there. I am curious, what is different about your 09 versus the 08's? I went ahead and bought an 08, but I thought about waiting for the 09's. Just curious as to what is different about it. Anything major?

I just pulled my 40ft fifth wheel (18000lbs) out to the mountains for the winter snowmobiling season and I pulled it aboout 75 - 85 mph and got 6 mph for the full 1000 mile trip. My regen came on about every 40 - 50 miles into a full tank and would not turn off untill I had to fill and turn of the truck which it then said to keep driving which I couldn't because I was out of fuel. The last 150 miles we met a buddy and he has a brand new 08 with 4000 miles on it and the very same fifth wheel (Kestone Raptor) and we pulled threw the hills of wyoming about 75 - 85 and he never regened and mine went on 20 miles after we met and never shut off till we arrived and turned off the truck. On the way home (1000 miles) the truck never went into regen. The truck is now getting two new turbos as the say that it threw a code that they didn't like and will look at the regen after they get the turbos replaced (have not gotton a solid answer as to what is wrong with the turbos). Never had any problems with any of my 7.3s for 6.0s when pulling and got 9-11 when pulling the same trailer at same speeds.
