I was wondering how to tell if I have the newest flash done on the computer? I noticed tonight that the truck went into regen (I think) when I stopped at home. The idle went up to 1200 in park and stayed there for about 5 minutes. I did not see anything on the dash. I thought I read the last flash now says on the dash when it is in regen. Can I get the info using a obII code reader? or is there some other way to tell. Just got the truck new 2 weeks ago for my birthday present from the wife. It is a f350 lariat job1 6.4 dually any info would help. It goes back to the dealer wednesday for service and if it needs the flash then I want to make sure it gets it.

you're dealer has to pull the computer code you have, and compare it with the most recent listed in fords database.

Hi,
There is a way to tell. Your truck was in regen at idle; and the newest PCM flash (TSB 8-13-2 or 8-13-3 for newer builds) does not allow regen at idle anymore... so you do not have the latest flash.

We saw a 2mpg (hand calc) increase on our F250 with the latest flash... been through 4 tanks of fuel with the new flash so far. It seems like the real deal.

Are you kidding??? 2mpg increase!!! I'm making the appointment today!!! That is the best news I've heard about the truck since I got it.

BTW, my Dad is looking at getting a '04 6.0 with 199,000 miles PM me with any wise advise. Thanks in advance.

so if the regen started when I was going 30 mph and parked the regen should stop? or does it keep going till its done? I came home and when I put it in park and took my foot off the brake to shut down is when the rpm's went up to 1200. I left it rumming for a couple of minutes then desided to go around the block , when I got back home it was back to nornal idle

Hi,
You don't have the latest PCM flash. It absolutely does not allow idle regen anymore. It just came out like a month ago, and dealerships do not flash the inventory on their lot before the trucks are sold.

Just print the TSB out and take it in with your service appt and I'm sure they'll be able to do it. You have to tell them that you do not want the truck to regen during idle... otherwise they might try to charge you to flash it. The TSB took care of a few problems (I think cruise control issue as well) so if your truck has cruise control you could say that you have that problem.

Good luck, congrats on the new truck

Have spoke to my dealer about this TSB - there is no charge for the re-flash. Dealer indicated it would take about an hour to finish. After the re-flash is done you will get a notification on your trip computer that the engine is in regen mode and will tell you when it is complete. As for the cruise control issue - the re-flash will smooth out the cruise and stop the surging that occurs when you press the "set" button to increase speed. Will also stop the truck from opening the throttle wide-open when you press "resume".

Thanks for all the info The dealer said the all the recals were done to the trunk before we bought it. is there a place to go and find all the recalls on a 08 job 1 f 350

Hi,
I've seen 2-3mpg increase in city/very little highway driving. I drive with a light foot though... but I always have; even when I was averaging 11.6mpg since purchased last year. Now the past 4 tanks I've gotten 15, 14.5, 15.2, 14.6. It has definetely been regenning a couple times a tank as well. I think this reflash just does it much more efficiently now.

Grumpygreg, As for the dealership checking the recalls; I don't think a TSB and/or PCM flash falls under the recall category.

I had mine reflashed last Thursday and I do believe it's helped on the mileage. I cross a pretty good size mountain a couple times a week and my average MPG always gets down around 13.1 to 13.3 and now it will stay above 14! The resume on the cruise control is as smooth as a baby's butt now. I still havn't seen the regen message on the computer yet though, but then I havn't seen a regen since back in the winter! (I have one of those trucks with sooty tailpipes).

Awesome, thanks guys!!

Is there a version number? I thought I saw, a couple months back, a post somewhere of a version number which was kind of long with numbers and letters.

It sounds like I should expect to get this flash done for free from the dealer. Is this a valid expectation?

You either have a crappy dealer, or they are lying (then they are crappy). My dealer told me when I called this afternoon that if Ford released it, they will have it.

They still did veryify and everything is set to go tomorrow morning.

So my Owner's Manual goes through the Indash Computer readouts and explains, is there an Owners Manual addendum? Should I receive that from the dealer or can I get it off the internets?

#18 ·
I called the dealer back and advised them of all of this GOOD info. The service manager looked it up and found it. He said they will download it tonight and I can have it tomarrow!!!

#19 ·
its really sad how uninformed alot of these service guys are

#20 ·
This is really great information guys and much appreciated.
I suspect that the same dealership that I have used since 1995 and bought 6 vehicles from is just misinformed, misguided, or really just does not give a crap about someone that just bought a rig from them 7 months ago. They are telling me there is no new re-flash for my truck.
No problem, I will give someone else my business from now on:nod:

Does Ford have a website where we can see the TSB info to print it out? I've seen the other threads on this site and others which reference the latest TSB and older ones by number, but I never know where the info is coming from. Is it ford Techs that are posting to these forums, or is there some place I can go to look at the TSB and print off a copy?

Also, how many computers are there on the truck? Is ther one for the engine, one for the transmission, and one for the dash display (full instrument display model)?

I ask, because the last time I was at the dealership in March to have the latest flash at the time done, the service manager was mentioning something about the flash affecting the engine PC, but not the display or tranny.

I assumed that there was one PCM and for lack of a better term, everything was plugged into it. SO, If I got the latest flash, it would include any changes to the engine, tranny, and display.....

I'll be making an appt. Next week to have the seat back recall, fuel cell recall, software update (for latest TSB), oil change, and a few other warranty items taken care of. My passenger side heated mirror doesn't seem to work nearly as efficiently as my drivers side mirror does, i'd like to have it replaced, and finally my recirculate button on my HVAC cluster doesn't seem to make a difference, i'm hoping this is just a vacuum tube disconnected somewhere.

my best friends owns a repair shop, i get my info from him, but i could probably send you a file of the newest tsb.

yes, there is a PCM a TCM and an IC module.

OK, mine is done, I'll be picking up on my lunch hour.

I asked him about an addendum or supplement and he said they don't have anything. So I asked him to give me a photo copy of the sheet he read to me on what it included.

Also he said the version number he has is 56.2. I'll get more info when I pick it up.

I'll also ask if there is a website to go to.

jbiersba, My A/C works but it seems like I really need to keep it running pretty fast to keep the cabin cool. What makes you think the recirculate button isn't working properly? I have a CC so maybe the cab is just so big it needs to run that hard to keep it cool.

#23 ·
Thanks.... so here's the deal with the recirculate button. This is my second Crew Cab F250.... This one is an 08, previous model was an 06. Both have the fancy climate control option... I forget what Ford calls it (everything is electronic). On the 06, and most any other vehicle i've had with a recirculate option (I even think the 08 was working this way a while ago, I'm not sure when it stopped) when you hit the recirculate button, you hear the vents close, and then you also hear additional noise from the fans, and the output from the vents increases.

Currently when I hit the recirculate button, absolutely nothing happens. I don't here the pneumatics closing off any vents, I don't hear an in crease in fan noise because the internal vents have ben closed, and there is no perceived difference in output from the panel vents. I also don't notice a difference when switching back and forth between recirculate and fresh air if my windows get fogged.

PS..... I also agree that I have to keep the engine at a higher RPM to keep the AC working. I don't think it's because of the crew cab though.... My 06 was also a crew cab and I didn't have this problem, my 06 was a gas powered truck though, not Diesel like the 08. I'm no expert, but my guess is that Ford uses the same pulley size on the gas a diesel trucks when it comes to the pulley on the AC compressor. as a result (since the RPMS on the diesel are lower) you need to be moving faster in the Diesel truck to get the better productivity out of the AC. Just my thoughts, but i've grown to live with it.

Yah, the A/C works fine, just it seems like I always have the fan on 2 or 3 to keep the cabin cool enough, and we haven't had any blazin' heat this summer.

I did check out MyFord.com to see if it would give me any decent info. None, the site is basically useless.

OK, so got it back and filled up to check my MPG's, and reset the Lie-o-meter, like I always do.

The prior tank I put on almost 200 miles, 15 of which was towing in a terrible stiff wind that I averaged about 7 mpg's on, the rest was running around town 80% highway. The Lie-o-meter said 14.?, I got 11.?, but I did reset after my 15 miles of towing, so I expected it to be off.

In all I think my Lie-o-meter is pretty accurate (not towing), for some reason when towing it is way off by 2 - 3 mpg's, it always reads high.

With that said, my Lie-o-meter on the short trip I took home after the fill up got as high as 20.0 mpg's and when I backed it into the garage it said 19.7. It was only a 15 mile trip on a county highway doing between 50 and 55 mph.

I'm sure I would not be able to pull that kind of mpg for a full tank but if I can get 16 mpg's that would be flippin awesome!!!

This is the first time it has read so good, with the exception of one 40 mile trip with a very stiff tail wind. Plus I have almost 7K miles on it, so it's getting looser.

The flash was warranty work, so it cost nothing.

To flash or not to flash?

Hmmm. I obviously don't have the newest flash. Bought my truck last December. Don't know
what Build # it is. I have hand calculated my mileage with every tankful, and have it in a spreadsheet.
I now have 8700 miles on the truck, and I've been getting right about 15.3 MPG, no load, back
and forth to work about 20 miles each way, about 3/4 highway, 1/4 city. BUT with the last tankful,
my mileage has increased to sixteen.3 MPG (my six key does not work). Is this still breaking in?

Don't use the cruise control, so haven't noticed the surge on resume that y'all have talked about.
It DOES regen in idle (it did it yesterday).

Question: Is there any DOWNSIDE to the new flash? Does it include anything we might not want
if we knew it was in there? (Like more difficult to use a programmer or DPF delete?)
Yes, I'm paranoid. Increased mileage is appealing, but I can get that anyway when my warranty
miles are up with a programmer and DPF delete.

Wondering what to do. :dunno:

I lost about 1mpg towing with the new flash 7.5mpg to about 6.5mpg on a 500 mile trip, maybee weather related more wind and ac cranked:dunno:
The cruise did hold overdrive much better so I was surprised with the drop in mpgs.

I will say if you do any towing the new flash solved a problem I had when backing into a spot at a campground, I was trying to put the trailer in between a couple trees and only had about 3"s to spare on each side and the regen kept coming on and reving the idle up, I had to shut my truck off and restart it 4 times and almost smashed my trailer because it would rev to 1200prms and with the brake on it stayed at 900rpms, made it real hard to feather into a tight spot.

#29 ·
The New flash will most certainly take that problem away for you. The same thing happened to me trying to back the boat into the garage. I almost put the darn thing through the back wall:doh:
No problems at all now with the beast going into regeneration at Idle any more. And I got a GREAT new Tech at a New dealer now out of the deal!!
:thumb:Thanks Wa. Neighbor for the heads up:thumb:

I was in the dealer getting a key made. By the way don't ever lose a key. They have to be programmed and it cost about $120 each! It takes about 20-30 minutes to make a key.
I asked the technician about the program in the PCM. He looked it up on his computer hooked into my OBD port. The computer said my program was not up to date and he has to have it downloaded into his computer that night and to bring the truck back tomorrow for the update.
