Weird sounds again.

8 months ago my 2008 6.4 started making a wooshing sound every so often while driving. It then started doing every time I drove it. Took it to the dealership and they kept it for 2 weeks and said that it was a pin hole in the radiator. They then replaced it and as soon as I pulled out of the parking lot the check engine light came on. I took it back and they said it was showing trouble code P2002. They said they reprogrammed the computer and it went away.

Fast forward to this past week the sound has returned. I have also noticed the boost drops off completely and then builds back as soon as the sound dies down. It is also now making a roaring sound. These sounds do not occur at any particular time they happen sporadically while driving. I could be on the interstate at high speeds or slower back roads. It is also showing the P2002 code again.

The truck is stock except or a k&n air filter.

Thank you in advance for any help anyone could give.

Possible Causes:

Dirty air cleaner element
Recent manual or thorough diesel particulate filter regeneration
Aftermarket accessories and performance modifications
Modified tailpipe
Exhaust leaks before or near the diesel particulate filter pressure sensor
Leaks in the diesel particulate filter pressure sensor connecting hose
Damaged diesel particulate filter

Diagnostic Aids: Check for leaks in the exhaust system. Check for aftermarket exhaust accessories and performance modifications that decrease the exhaust restriction. If a new diesel particulate filter was recently installed, verify the diesel particulate filter parameter reset procedure was carried out.

Could any of these cause the radiator to leak? Both times this has happened the truck has been bone dry and no coolant. I just drove it from northern New Hampshire to West Virginia the day before we left I checked everything and everything was perfect. 2 days after we arrived When this happened I checked and the coolant was empty. This happened before when they replaced the radiator. The truck is still under extended warranty so it's at the dealership hopefully they get it resolved. I am living in a hotel at the moment till we close on our house so I really don't have a way to check it out thoroughly my self.

I've heard k&n are not recommended for the 6.4

is your upper radiator hose hard, can you still squeeze the hose together? test that to see if you can after the truck had warmed up to operating temperature, you want to get the thermostat to open up. if you CANNOT squeeze it, kiss your head gasket good bye! If you CAN then you possibly have a leak somewhere in the radiator.

do you still have the factory intake for the truck? If you do put it back on, go to a different dealership because now there going to be dicks to you. Have them diagnose the issue further. That's a load of crap that they wouldn't tell you what the issue is because of a simple intake. Hell i am completely deleted with aftermarket turbos and a few random other goodies and they have never harassed me like that.

No, I wish I had the stock intake but the k&n was on it when I got the truck. I am going to take it to a shop called Smokin Diesel to see if they can diagnose the issue. The check engine light went out when I was driving it to the dealership but still made the wooshing sound.

can you describe more about this wooshing sound. Like when is it making the noise, throttle position, rpms, boost etc.... are you loosing any boost or anything? i accidentally hit unsubscribe, if you dont hear back from me shoot me a PM. I would argue that with the dealership, if you bought the truck with the intake on there, and the extended warranty they either need to honor there commitment or they need to refund you some money! Im sure they know what the problem is, it could be something that could lead to a big problem and there trying to screw you because the dont want to do the work, ive seen this happen before. Just shoot me some of that info if you can, also if you could get a video of it that would help too possibly.

How about posting a sound clip, or take a video and post the video on YouTube and post the link in this thread so we can actually hear it. With aftermarket intakes you'll hear a whooshing sound that the stock intake muffles so you don't hear it.

The sound happens happens mostly while getting on the throttle. (Climbing hills, and passing). The boost drops of as soon as it starts and the second it ends the boost builds back up. The sound last only a second or two. I will try and get a sound clip or YouTube post. It sounds like a muffled whistle.

It sounds a lot like the turbo sound but different. Took it to a different shop this evening, and in a matter of minutes he located a whole in the radiator. And then after about 20 minutes or so of driving around with it hooked into his laptop said that the EGR Valve is messed up. Ford is covering the radiator since it is less than 9 months old. And we have a new valve on order. Hope this fixes the issue. The guy seemed like he knew what he was talking about. Their where a ton of trucks in his lot that he's was working on so I'm optimistic. Thanks for all the info and I will keep you guys updated on how it goes.
