I've got a sweet 2000 f250 with a 7.3. Its got 135k miles, only 25k of which I put on it. I want to change the coolant for piece of mind but i'm having a lot of trouble getting a straight answer on what coolants with SCA are compatable and whats the capacity of the cooling system. I'd like to get concentrate but I need to know exactly what to get and how much to get? As far as flushing the system is it all that necessary? Do I have to use VC9 or can I get regular flush. Where to get coolant precharged with SCA? Most of the local autoparts stores don't carry coolant for diesels and several have tried to tell me that I can use regular auto coolant which I know is wrong. Thanks for any help.
hit up car quest or napa. They SHOULD have on the shelf. It'll have a pic of a big rig on it. Get 4-gals of 100% concentrate and 4-gals of distilled water. To properly flush it, you'll want to get an additional 20gals of distilled. Remove the t-stat housing and t-stat, then re-install t-stat housing, lightly, and start flushing. Remove the plugs on each side of motor to get ALL coolant/water out and proceed with flushing with the 20-gals of distilled. Very easy but messy if not careful. Once done, teflon up or paste up the plugs, install new t-stat and housing (oem housing sucks, when used moret han once), then fill up with 4-galso f concentrate and top with 4-gals of distilled.
So exactly what brand of coolant? Or will anything with a truck on the label be fine? There is no way I'm going to have time to take the thermostat housing off, can't I just flush the cooling system without doing that? What flush to use?
It literally takes 3 mins to remove the thermostat. If there is any rust on your block at all, pulling the block drains will suck and probably won't work. You can remove the block heater to drain the coolant also.
When I did my flush I used Delo ELC concentrate. Unfortunately, one of my t-stat bolts broke off but I was replacing the water pump anyway. Went through 2 airtex pumps before installing a motorcraft pump before all was well. Like stated above, the system takes a total of 8 gallons.
installed an Airtex w/p 2yrs+ ago, 75k....still pump'n.
