I found someone who has a 03 F250 6.0PSD that's been sitting for a year. Says it doesn't run right now, batteries are dead. I am going to go give it a jump and see if I can get it to fire.
What should I look for, what do I need to know about a 6.0PSD that hasn't been on the road in a year, etc. Do I need to prime the fuel system?
He said it ran when he parked it a year ago, but it needed work. It was leaking oil at about a quart a week, had occasional hesitation when driving. He didn't want to mess with it once he got a company truck so parked it and there it sat.
Tips, warning signs, etc...what do I need to know?
Just make sure to put some fuel treatment in the gas tank and let it do it's magic. Over that period of time, algae can grow and clog up the injectors and clog up the injectors immediately.
Make sure you find where the oil leak is coming from. If it's coming from between the block and the bedplate that's bad news and you gotta take the engine out and basically disassemble it to fix it. Plus seems how it's been sitting id make him put new filters in it, new fuel (probably going to have to blow out the fuel lines too) and change the oil. See if you can get it started so you have kinda of a clue what your getting into and not just shooting in the dark. Also I bet after sitting that long the injectors will have a stiction problem and need replaced.
I went to check it out, batteries were both flat, wouldn't even jump start. Went down to o'rilies and picked up two new batteries, added fuel conditioner to the tank, gave her a few cranks and it barely fired up. Sounded like it was missing. After idling rough for 5 minutes it smoothed out.
After seeing this, I was a little more comfortable pulling the trigger. Asking price was $5000 in non running condition. Hearing it run I rolled the dice and drove it back to my company's truck lot. Drove great for the 40 mile trip. I think I scored!
I was told it was leaking oil at about a quart a week, and it was hesitating while driving on the freeway. I've only put about 40 miles on it so far so I probably wont see anything till I get some fluids changed out and get to driving it some more.
Both truck look really good. Yeah, I think you have the big brother little brother thing going on there. I don't even need another truck but if I found that deal I would for sure have brought the truck. Congrats.
Few updates... I got the oil leak fixed, it was ICP valve and HPOP gasket leaking, also had a cracked fuel filter housing. The oil leak got so bad it toasted my starter, so I had to throw in a new one while I was at it. Next day I took it out, had to head to my companies truck lot to hop in a box truck to deliver a load of equipment. Made it to the area, and was cut off bad by a BMW, had to slam the brakes and all hell broke loose. Truck made a loud clank and started rumbling all over the place.
Threw the truck in 4 high to drag it back to the lot, I knew something on the driveline was shot. I thought I had grenaded the diff by the way it was driving. Did my early morning deliver and headed back to the truck to inspect.
lifted the rear and pulled the diff cover, everything appeared to be in order, it actually looked extremely clean, gear oil was good, no metal shavings, no missing teeth on the gears.
Looked further up the driveline and found this...
Looks like the extreme pinion angle when I slammed the brakes caused the slip shaft to slip out. When it tried to go back in it binded hard. The shaking and clunking was caused by the slipshaft hitting the tank skid plate and upper cross member.
I found a shop in San Francisco that whipped up a new drive shaft on saturday night, I had it cut 2" longer this time, to compensate for the lift. Re-installed and was good to go.
And while I was at it, I found another killer deal on a PSD.
Picked up the 02 F-350 Lariat 4x4 SCLB, for $5000 as well. 7.3L, 89k miles. Couldn't resist. I'm going to give it to my boss who needs to replace his tired 93 F350 7.3 IDI
