I'm looking at an '06 6.0 with 46k miles on it. The tech at the dealership reported that it would need ficm 1/2 shell, turbo cleaning/replacement, and cac boots among other minor things. I check the degas bottle and it was a dark brown color but no oily, milky or chalky residue signs.
I drove the truck from the dealership across the street to the free way on ramp. As I hit 80 mph it started hissing bad. It didnt do it friday when i drove it and the salesman agreed there is a problem. I assumed it was either the turbo but sounded like an exhaust leak(to my untrained diesel ear). It increased with the throttle and while under a load at first but by the time i returned to dealership, it would do it while reving in park. I checked the degas cap and it looks like it is sealed. No oil or smoke from exhaust, degas or oil cap. I walked away tonight but the dealer is having the tech look at it and will update me sometime tomorrow.
I didn't notice the boost on the first test drive but seemed like it wasn't bad on the failure ride today. It didn't get past 20lb but I figured turbo need cleaning. Nothing unusual about boost levels.
I'll be buying this as is. They'er asking 21k. Any advise would be appreciated. This would be my first diesel(truck). Not afraid to learn but don't want to do it the hard way.
That's what I was thinking too but it is a 4x4 lariat dually. I don't mind doing the work/learning but buying turbos... And I don't know if the hissing noise is a problem that requires a cab removal solution.
Is the brownish color in the degas bottle a serious issue?
Ill jump on deck and say ya the 22k is a bit high. The good thing the issue's that you stated are all very easy diy projects. The ficm is as simple as pull and the get it repaired or get a new one. The turbo, this too iss is a pull and clean yourself.
The exhaust leak, well they can be a PIA to find and fix but you can do this as well.
But the biggest thing Id suggest is you get some type of monitor on the truck before you talk money. The dash guages are junk. You can spend $150 and save thousands.
Nice rig Qh. I'm not in that big of a hurry but do need something. I figured with the low miles it would be worth talking to a dealer. I may offer 18 and settle for 19 but I'm not afraid to walk away at all. The brown film in the dega was my major concern but no one here has raised a major issue with it.
If I get it I'm sure you will hear more from me. Thanks for all the input and the price opinions.
My degass bottle had this same brownish film. It wasnt oil, Im not sure it was kinda like rusted? But I tryed to wash it out with no luck. But I asked about the same thing and didnt get much back...I wondered if maybe the ford gold just stained it.
I'd walk away. There's plenty of low mileage King Ranch and Lariat dually's out there for the same price. If the turbo is in need of cleaning then there's a possibility it could've overboosted at one time... not exactly a death sentence, but if someone kept driving it with an overboost condition then you're looking at head gaskets.
IIRC the casting sand Ford uses can stain degas bottles to that brownish color
I agree, get a monitor. I went with a buddy of mine to look at an 03' 6.0 Lariat FX4 CCSB. 154k miles for $8200. Truck was cosmetically great with normal interior wear for the year. It ran and drove just fine, and even though the truck supposedly had a new HPOP installed recently, the oil temp just kept rising. By the time we got back to the guy's house, it had a 22* delta. No telling how long he's been driving it like that too.
Sales guy called me back and said it was the exhaust manifold and they are fixing it. Would this be an indication that it has seen excessive heat? Ive read up pipe issues but do manifolds just fail? I'm leaning more towards walking now.

Yup sorry bud but I would run from that one. I think that it is strange that such a low mileage truck would be having these issues. I think someone who did not know what they were doing has been into that engine and screwed up whatever they were trying to accomplish and dumped the truck.
If the exhaust gas temps have been really high (ie truck beat on constantly/heavy boost/towing) then yes the rear studs can warp and break. Manifolds can easily get warped. That's a good thing to look at on a 6.0 if your in the used market.
I have to Finance so i have to hit a dealer, but i dont want to get burned and set back to hard to quickly! I found a 05 350 with the milky, tan cream in the degas. Any input on what to look for in the bottle vs what it might mean? no heavy oil , or fuel smell ... just creamy. BTW also what scanner can help with cooland and oil temp for $150 ???
Why do you have to go through a dealer to finance? Go to your local bank and set that up ahead of time. You can get approved and then be able to either walk in to a dealership or buy private party. BTW I'd also run far away from the truck you're looking at now. Sounds like the dealership is either inept or flat out lying to you.
i got a 05 F350 drw 175K in sight with the tan cream degas bottlegoing on down from $17 to $11.5K one owner car fax and Cfax shown lots of iol service thru out the years. which is why I am considering financing and using cash for rev flush, and later on Bullet proof D external oil cooler. freaken love fords, but dam have I stayed up late nights searching cummins mega cab and thinking of calling it quits...
I'd see if the dealer would let me drive it home over night and run some real test like head gaskets the works! Injectors also could go if possible a injpw% could help in the long run any questions feel free to pm me! Also those stains in the degas could be just that degas what u want to see is the coolant. Under the truck there in a plastic nut back that out a bit and put the coolant in a water bottle good was to see what it looks like! Also want to see the delta range to check for oil cooler or egr cooler damage! Also agreed the manifold when exposed to high egts will cause broken studs or warped manifolds no that's not a common problem! Also if possible unplug the icp and check for oil intrusions as well as at the harness. Ummm I think I covered most of the things
Thanks all! Emailed Scangauge II and they said yes only the II model will show coolant temp, and then I get xgauge feature for free, that includes the oil temp and fuel rail pressure..
I would have to jump on the band wagon and say you can find a better deal. My truck a '06 Lariat CC 4x4 SRW does have a rebuilt status and just under 100k miles (cosmetic damage only) and the owner thought the turbo was done and just turned out to be a cracked up-pipe. I only paid 10k.
Good luck!:thumb:
