I have a 2006 F-250 Crew Cab Lariat 4x4. It has the 6.0 engine, has around 150k miles. I was on I-65 doing about 65-70mph and it started to lug down. It will only do it around 55-70mph, onlly does it when its shifts gears also. I've done the EGR delete kit. I use fuel additives every other tank. It's starting to dump black smoke out the back every time I accelerate, doesn't do it at idle. My mechanic said it is probably the fuel injectors, but that's a lot of money if it's not going to fix it. I've been averaging around 10.8mpg and it lost a lot of acceleration. ANY advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
find either a scangauge monitor from bulletproof diesel set up to monitor your truck. a turbo underboost could cause black smoke... your getting fuel to a turbo thats not building enough boost then black smoke... edge insight or scangauge 2 is cheapest route.
Welcome. Sounds like air delivery. Black smoke is lack of air, not injectors. Likely its a leak in the intercooler or pipes, or your turbo is clogged and not able to change the VGT position to give you the boost needed. Assuming you dont have a monitor, Theres a 2 wire plug on your turbo, while idling, unplug it and listen to the exhaust, the sound should change if the turbo is clean. If theres no change then its clogged. Note it can be kinda clogged and still change noises. Best way to check is to monitor ebp with a scanner. Also if you go from a stop and do a full throttle 0-60 you should ahave a few sec of lag and then boost should very quickly jump to about 20 psi. If youre not hitting 20 psi thats a definite air issue. Try those 2 things and check intercooler/pipes for leak and post what you find.
Thank you for your replies. It is not hitting 20psi when I'm hammered down on it. Another problem it just started having. I was driving to get envelopes and it wasn't making its typical sound, turbo would barely reach 10psi and it was ROLLING black smoke, even at idle. When I pulled in the parking lot it died and wouldn't crank back up until I let it sit for about 10 minutes. It didn't have the typical sound, turbo was hardly reaching 10psi and was rolling black smoke on the way home. PLEASE HELP.
Your newfound issue is possibly seperate, but could be boost related to your other issues. Best to start with one unless you have a monitor like scangauge 2 or even the sct programmer or data logging capable device. If you can find something check the ICP pressure when cranking warm. It should jump to 500 psi in a second or so.
First things First though
- check your air filter and tubing going to turbo for obstructions
-check the turbo inlet for damage/bent blades and turn it by hand checking for binding (it will have some play and wont be super smooth to turn, but it shouldnt contaxt the turbo housing)
-check piping and rubber boots going from turbo to intercooler to intake elbow for cracks or holes
-inspect the plastic sides of the intercooler that they are fully seated in the aluminum part
-do like I said and unplug the 2 wire connector on the turbo when idling (DONT DRIVE with it unplugged)
No kidding? Glad to hear it man! That's a relatively inexpensive and simple fix.
