Decision Time 08-10 F450 or 11-12 F350 DRW

Not sure which one is the best option for me. I currently drive a 2011 F250 but I'm looking at a larger 5th Wheel and need both the payload and towing. I will be towing 18000 lbs with a 3k+ pin weight.

My concern is that in the price range I am looking at (under $35k) my options are an 08-10 F450 with 45-90k miles or an 11-12 with 120-150k miles. I really like my 11 F250 but I'm a little concerned about having over 100k on my tow vehicle.

It will be 90% used with trailer in tow. Not my daily driver. Is the 08-10 F450 reliable enough or is the 11-12 the way to go even with the miles.

I am in Southern California so the DPF delete is possible but not anywhere legal. I would prefer to leave it stock if possible. I just need reliability as this is what tows my family and toys out to the desert and back. Sitting on the side of the road is not our idea of a fun time.

Please give me your opinions or relate real facts to my decision if you could. I appreciate all the ideas you may have.

i would go with the 11 or 12, and get the 6.7, more power, and its a diesel, so 100k is just breaking it in if it was properly maintained, should be able to see 300k+ out of the 6.4 or the 6.7 if maintained,

the 6.7 is also common rail, i think the 6.4 is still using the high pressure oil system on it, so the 6.7 has a better fueling system

Thanks for the opinions. My wife hasn't quite bought off on the 11 or 12 just because I have to keep it under $35k and that pushes me to trucks with 120k+ unless I might be able to get her interested in an XLT cloth interior. Then I can probably get one in the 80k mile range.

I just went through this same situation for the same reason. What I determined is it you are going to keep it stock, 6.7 for sure. Tuned you could go with either. In the end it came down to the tranny. I think once you tow with a 6.7 you won't want to go back and I didn't want that regret.

I would say under your circumstances to look for a 2008-10 F350 drw. You can find a low mileage Lariat or King Ranch in your price range, add a warranty and hit the road. The 6.7s don't get much better mileage than the 6.4s with that kind of weight behind them anyway.

Definitely get the 6.7. My bossman had a 2010 F450, 2012 F250, 2012 F350 SRW, and now the 2012 F350 DRW and he wishes he would have done this first. The 450 had a full 4" exhaust, Spartan, EGR Delete w/ CAC Pipe and elbow, Intake and the fuel mileage while towing his 4 horse living quarters trailer sucked really bad compared to his 6.7. Im not talked 4 mpg difference while towing, but when fuel mileage is at or under 10, 1.5mpg is a big difference

Thanks for all the replies. A warranty is one thing but reliability is really what I want.

I've been towing my 25ft toy hauler with my 6.7 so I feel as I might miss the ease it tows if I go down to the 6.4.

Is there anything I should look for when looking at 6.7's with 80k+ miles?

just went through the exact same situation as you and ended up with a 2011 f350 and couldnt be happier and i found several of 2011 lariats with 80k and under for anywhere from 30-40k . look around some more finding a 2011 for under 35 is pretty easy. i came from ram though and couldnt be happier about my decision on going with the 6.7 . i bought my truck through woodhouse maybe try looking there ??

Mine is a drw as well . Like I said before try looking around more there are tons out there in your price range under 35k . Im very happy I went with the drw as well and only reason I decided against the 450 was because I coupdnt find one with low miles and one that was beat up to baad

I recently went from a 2011 to a 2010. It's a night and day difference between towing with the two and the 6.7 wins hands down. I got better mileage towing, the suspension was better, egt where lower, tranny ran cooler and overall it just felt more stout and safer when towing(gooseneck running around 14k) I regret everyday I tow with the 6.4 for not going with a 6.7 , I'm currently trying to sell mine to go back. With that being said The biggest difference in my opinion is the 6 speed tranny in the 6.7. I tried a tuner and rear airbag suspension on the 6.4 but it didn't help much
