What would cause a turbo that is producing great boost (25 @ 6000') dosnt seem to have any leaks but, it just dosnt sound as loud as when I first installed it. Ecspecially at idle. Is this possible? What would cause this?
Maybe the vanes are stuck so it's not cycling while idling. Mine will cycle between 15% and 85% most of the time and sometimes it will just sit at 67% and be happy there.
The turbo could be stuck in the perfect spot. Believe me, it happens. I recently cleaned a turbo in a 6-speed truck that definitely had a negative affect on performance. It's really hard to explain to a customer that their truck runs worse now after I "fixed" it.
The whistle at idle is caused by the vanes being all the way closed creating the most backpressure and it needs the highest VGT duty cycle to do that.
I think my hearing got a little worse too because im getting proper vgt% and it just doesnt seem as loud anymore haha no one else thinks that though :hehe:
It may read between 60-85% at idle. When it reads high the PCM is trying to warm the vehicle up faster.
I definitely noticed my 03 turbo wasn't much louder at idle than my 06, it was off idle that the thing started screaming. Eventually I did get used to the the 03 and it lost its appeal.
seems normal. I'll check my vgt readings tomorrow. what are you getting for a WOT boost psi? and is it tuned or not when you do the wot boost measurement.
Only "tune" I have is the atlas 40. I saw readings around 30% revin it up in the driveway. Dont know if I need to be actully running down the road and do a WOT.
