I finally decided that i want to send my motor out to get professionally built. But im not sure where to send it... So in lookin for input on who is the best at building a early 99 7.3 PSD motor? Any help would be great thanks!

You could give Dave at DI a call. I belive they sell short or long blocks.

#3 ·
Send it to Marty(maitain) along with the appropriate funds, i'm sure he's up for some more work on the side...:approve:

I would go to Wide Open Performance just cause I kinda know the guy who owns it, we whent to high school together, haven't seen him since, but he new his s--t back then and sure seems to know it now, just check out his site.

Wipeout Enterprise is another company that builds engines.

yup just stay close to home and save some cash, theres no reason to go out of state for a motor rebuild.

I wanna fully build my motor connecting rods pistons cam port and polished head everything.. Im lookin to get 600-700HP WITHOUT spraying nitrous!

#15 ·
How much money are you looking to spend? I honestly dont think that anyone has hit 700+ on fuel only. I am in the middle of a motor build and am seekinig 750+ on sray....

ALOT... i talked to a guy at ATS and he said im looking at 18,000 to 20,000 so its far from cheap

#21 ·
#18 ·
DO NOT USE ATS! My long block that I am building now is costing me about 12k.....

#19 ·
O know not to use ATS i just called them to get an idea of what i'd be looking at...

#20 ·
Im at 12k just with the Girdle, main studs, crowers, head studs,fire-rings, cam, and all of the other little parts to get the long block done and ready to go....

The Girdle is a must for high HP 7.3's.

#24 ·
Yeah just ask anyone who sells them. They'll tell you! :hehe::hehe:

I've done quite a bit of looking into this and talking with people about it and every person so sells them says you need them. All those who don't say you don't. The funny thing is the fastest powerstroke isn't running one last I checked!

The mains walk at the top where they meet the block. Not at the bottom where the girdles attach. Not to mention I've heard reports of main walking with the girdles because of this. If you want to prevent main walk you need to have a way to hold the mains at the top. Such as drilling and tapping a hole in the side of them and having a girdle that runs along the sides. Or even better yet have the holes where they main studs go into the block and through the caps machined to have a dowl pin installed that goes around the stud. That will keep them from walking.

Lott did not run a girdle on Snow White when it blew but he did put one on Amanda's truck(600hp). All the high power 7.3's(500hp+) have a girdle except for Jacob. And he will be adding one as soon as funds allow him to. Ask Ben Miller if he uses a girdle? I already know the answer and so do you.

The mains will walk no matter what with just a cap girdle. The amount of walk with a girdle is A WHOLE LOT LESS with one than without. It ties one main to another plus they come with ARP main studs to hold things tighter.

The girdle from Wipe Out Enterprises ties the mains to the oil pan holes with a gigantic ring/plate system. Wipe Out also uses dowels with the main stud though the middle however this girdle system is $2500.

I will guarantee that I will have a girdle on my built block before it goes into my truck but I don't make any power so I am not worried about main walk anyway. I just want to have one to say I have one.

I just want to have one to say I have one.
I think that probably has more to do with it than anything. I know the girdles that were originally out had some pretty major flaws in their design.

I remember seeing pics of the one from wipeout and that huge price. Honestly from the stuff I've seen from them and what very little I've actually heard of them doing anything I kind of take them as a joke. They show some nice fancy pics on their site but haven't heard of anything they've actually done. :dunno:

#26 ·
And if you are quoted more than $850 on a girdle, call Bean.

#28 ·
WOE, a joke? Man, you need to get out more. They are HUGE in tractor pulling engines.

I won't try to mess around or be sarcastic any longer, I will just be blunt and direct.

A girdle is necessary for big power, period. Any desire to make more than 550hp+ should have a girdle.

What is your take on fire rings?

#29 ·
Mine will be here shortly...

#30 ·
Well I'm glad to hear they do something. I guess not being big into the sled pulling arena I don't hear much of them. You'd think if they were so great they'd be more known in other areas as well.

I'd suggest rather than just believing everything you read on here and assuming that just because you make X amount of HP you NEED something try calling around to places that do sell them as well as places you don't. Give Lott a call and ask him about them. Unless he's changed his tune on them since we last talked he's not a big advocate. For that matter IIRC he was even running the stock main bolts in his last engine. I was going to order a set from him a couple years ago and he said "why?" He didn't use them and didn't stock them.

When it comes down to it do what you will. Do the research or just belive everything that anyone says on here. Spend your money on what ever you want. I'm definitely not going to say it would hurt to run one. But IMHO the "necessity" of running one is very much overrated.

Fire rings are definitely a necessity if you plan on makeing a ton of boost.

#31 ·
If you are going to make the power that I will be, you need it. It is not needed for a low HP truck. Look at all the 7.3 guys making over 550hp, They have a girdle..

I would rather be safe then sorry...

MOST except for the fastest. Maybe he knows something???:dunno:

#33 ·
Lott put in girdles on the engine's he built for Thuggie and Elmo :dunno:

Maybe he is confused in his old age, or maybe that is me.

What about it? He's not anywhere near the fastest being he doesn't drag race. He doesn't dyno either so noone actually knows what he's making other than the roumor mill going full bore. Not to mention that truck is COMPLETELY different than what we are dealing with. I'd be willing to bet that if he's running the kind of girdles that are redily available he's got all kinds of main walk! Also didn't I hear that he's not running a cooling system and that he's filled the block with grout or something like that? Yeah I guess that is a good engine to compare with the ones on here now isn't it?:doh:
