ARP re-torque??

So I should finish up studs on my 05 f350 170,000 miles tonight, but im not sure if I should do the re-tourque or not. When I picked the heads up from the machine shop the guy said there have been problems with the arps not being re-torqued and busting HG again. But ive read that re-torquing isnt necessary with the ultra lube. He also said that fords standard for blown HG is to just clean the heads and put back on without checking for warpage (sounds about right for the dealers here), leading me to believe that non flat heads are causing these failures. So im wondering what the consensus is. Anyone have or heard of experiences with stud failures or success with or without re-torque and at higher mileage?

Thanks

EDIT: the heads were milled flat. I redid the sequence at 210 after I completed the 3 incriments to 210 as the instructions says. Is there a break in for the studs before I can tear into it? (Running MPD tune). Also a bit off subject, but some coolant got into the oil passages of the block, will that hurt it at all or evaporate out?

I don't care what kind of engine you have, or who makes it - *always* check heads for warpage. It's 5 minutes spent to KNOW that everything is true, and I can't see NOT spending that 5 minutes after all the work of tearing down the engine.

Technically, yes, you should retorque after a few heat cycles. But then, with the amount of torque used, I can't see you damaging anything by not doing it, provided you properly torque everything in the first place.

Put it this way, for my personal truck, which I am looking for a reliable setup, not a drag racer, I wouldn't retorque.

If I'm building a 1000hp racing 6.0L - I'm retorquing.

Here we goooo.......... Ford has a procedure in checking the heads. Ford also states NOT to redo the head.. If they are warped- replace them plain and simple. Dale(jaugernaut) Has done multiple and I mean probably 100+ head gasket jobs and never had a comeback using the ford procedure.. I believe ford- there is a reason the guys on here has had problems with there heads....................... Back to your question, you don't need to re-torque. Dale just did my headgaskets and put studs in etc etc... Heads came back straight as an arrow with no warpage etc etc... My truck has 171k miles on it. Original heads

I'm going to agree with boh here...must be nice to tell your customers that their heads are slightly warped but plenty in spec to machine flat...but we don't do that so spend 2k and buy new heads. Every single truck that has come through our shop the heads are sent out and gone through by our machine shop. I have never seen one head come back that was perfectly flat after it came off a truck.

I have done sevral of these stud jobs now...not 100+ but getting there and never retorqued any of the studs. Also havnet had a comeback. Just follow arps procedure and as you stated OP I usally hit them at 210 again after all the steps.

This is what the machinist told me, and I wouldnt douby thats what happens locally. I bought my truck with egr cooler delete, it had bad shuddering at hwy, took to dealer, their "diesel guy" said the egr valve was bad. Turns out I needed a ficm, which has a nice pid on ids systems. Another dealer couldnt tell me what trans fluid it used with the switch from sp to lv. Theres several different dealerships in town, 3 are ford, but honestly the only one id trust anymore is a gm dealer.

Thanks to those that shared their input, more would be good to get a consensus. If I re-torque, it will be thursday so I have time to change my mind.

Yep all remans... Wanna hear a funny but tragic story...

Customer buys heads from Ford, puts them on and 2 weeks later the truck has diesel fuel in the cooling system.. Pull injectors and perform Ford procedure for finding cracked heads and sure enough #3 cylinder cracked and leaking diesel fuel into the cooling system. Who pays for that?? Would suck to be that guy, huh?

So it begs the question "what exactly is a remaned head and who exactly remans Ford's heads?"

If we had the answer to those questions it may help to clear up some confusion..

IT may, but at the end of the day there is no good reason not to reman your heads. There's a sticky even in this subforum showing how to properly installed hardened valve seats.

If my heads come off, no chance of them going back on without being checked first, and if they need machine work they will get it - properly done.

I agree 100%. Every set of heads should be pressure checked(for cracks in fuel passage and valve seats), magnifluxed, and full valve job IMO...

I truly feel like this is one of the most important parts of the job, yet gets overlooked all the time.

I trust Dales opinion and experience with these motors BUT if the heads come off my truck they are going to a machine shop, end of story. Yes Ford/International says don't machine them if they are out of spec but as stated there are only remans available. I really hope they were machined. There is plenty of room to fix a slightly warped head and it is detailed pretty well in Jared's sticky on machining the 6.0.

Oh im loose as a goose bro. No worries- GO:icon_ford: or how ever u wanna put it lol... Mitch, there is actually no room to machine ford heads... That's why all these guys are having problems.. Same with detriots- its a one time deal. Got a 32 page book from pops today on the detriots on checking the heads- just the heads a 32 page book.... You have to replace the heads period. I can get into this but I wont because I am not a mechanic just a backyard wrencher wanna be... But ALL of these diesel heads DO NOT come FLAT from the machine shop... Ive learned a lot these last coupe weeks and learned a lot more with these last couple nights talking to dad(his thoughts on heads) and Dale on the 6.0 heads... Theres a difference between diesel and gas engine heads. Im just trying to get down to the correct way in making these engines reliable like they are and by not seeing another 6.0 owner bite the dust in screwing up there heads...:thumb:
