Thanks to all for sharing your knowledge on this site. I'm a corporate pilot, new to the list, driving an '03 F-350 XLT Crewcab / 7.3 PSD. Trouble free for 53k, then found diesel in coolant degas tank. Dealer in Dublin, CA advises injector sleeve on #8 cyl is leaking into coolant jacket ($1,100), and suggests also replacing other injector o-rings ($600). I'm reasonably competent (mechanically, that is) but new to working on diesels. Would appreciate comments on if this repair course seems reasonable, and if this type of failure should be expected at only 53K miles. (Warranty just timed out, of course!)

On the personal side, I'm a Texas boy, transplanted to the "Peoples Republic of California". I enjoy motorcycles (Honda GL1800A Goldwing, XR650L Dual Sport), firearms and the shooting sports, and hunting/camping. My PSD interests are primarily maintenance/knowledge, and improvements would be mostly for reliability/efficiency, rather than "hop-ups" or burning the tires off my ride.

Thanks in advance for any assistance that may be offered.

:ORG welcome:!!!!!!!!!

Looks like you're at the perfect place! You'll like it here, it's extremely addicting. Can't help you with difficulty on that job. I'd be scared to do it, but more than likely would still try. If you're mechanically proficient it doesn't seem like it would be too ridiculous of an undertaking. And the learning experience is always fun! :thumb:

Thanks for the welcome! I've enjoyed looking around the site, and am impressed with the knowledge base here. Having some trouble understanding how the fuel gets from the loose injector seat/sleeve/o-rings into the coolant. I can see in the oil, but I'm not picking up any fuel scent from the oil. Is the water jacket exposed to the injector "sleeve"? Haven't been able to find a decent drawing that shows detail of how the injector relates to the water jacket/sleeve/head, etc. Would appreciate any links to this. You know, a picture is worth a thousand....

Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm a newbie on forums, so apologies in advance for etiquette transgressions. Can I transfer this to the proper place, or just copy/paste original post as a new thread? Thanks, and take care.

Thanks to all for the warm welcome. Just got my F350 CC / 7.3l back from the dealer, following the diesel in coolant problem. Turned out to be the #5 cyl injector cup leaking, allowing the higher pressure fuel to bypass into the head cooling jacket. I had them replace all the injector seals while they had it open. Total bill came to just over $1,700, of which I was able to get a $200 discount. Engine has only 53K miles (100K warranty), but just timed out on the 5 yr limit. May as well try to recoup something from Ford. Anyone else had luck getting Ford to stand up for similar problems? Thanks, and "keep on truckin'". -Mike
