Idle only???

I have 97' F350 PSD, It's current condition is that it very difficult to start. It will start after about 30 seconds, but it runs really rough for about 1min. Then it smooths out to a good idle, but if you try to give it any fuel it just loads up horribly. Then it takes a few more secounds for it to smooth back out. I had one diesel shop tell me that it is the injectors and told me they would cost $400 a peice. The other shop is telling me that the throttle pedal switch is bad. Does any of these sound like a correct?

it is probably injector related, but it could be as simple as injector o rings being bad....it could also just be one or two bad injectors......very doubtfull (but possible) that all eight are bad

I just bought this truck so I know very little about the events leading up to this current problem. One thing I was told that the guy thinks that some Gas got mixed in with diesel. But this other than idle this truck will not run at all, idle is the only position that it will even run smooth enough to pull itself.

Yes I have already tried that?

Is there a way i can test the injectors myself? Let me reword my problem so that maybe you will understand the situation better. The truck will crank over just fine but will not not start on its own, require a little shot of petro. Just like it is not getting any fuel. Once you give it a little help it will start, butt runs very rough, it eventually smooth out to an idle. But it will only idle for about 6-7 min before it dies then you must start all over again. when it idles there is a constant gray smoke exiting the exhuast. If you try to give it fuel like under normal acceleration it just runs starts missing and will die in seconds. You can slowly increase the fuel up to about 1500rpm for about 1min then it does the same thing it just starts missing and dies. Any suggestions will help.

No I havn't checked that. how much is supposed to in the resevoir?

Oil level is about 3.5in from the top of resevoir. Do I need to put oil in it? What does this mean?

put oil in it and see how it reacts after that. It means your high pressure oil pump isnt getting good oil volume....could be an oil pump(low pressure....base engine) problem..or other things...

Okay filled almost to the top. Truck started up better. Ran real smooth at idle got it to run up to about 2000rpm like it should. Then it started all over missing really bad, check engine light came on and died. I took the cap back off the resevoir all the oil I just put in it is now gone, what oil is left in there has alot of air bubbles in it.

It will not run long enough to get warm but it is sitting inside a heated garage. I think I may have found my problem, I pulled the injectors today, and found that the o rings have hardened are pretty much flat. I think maybe it was bypassing the HPO into the cylinder. I am not sure this therory is possible, but the o rings are definatly bad. So I am going to try replacing them. Unless somone knows of very good price on a rebuilt stock injectors?

k, one major thing though, did you drain the high pressure oil rails before removing the injectors ?? If not, DONT crank it over as it may be hydrolocked....if you did disregard this....

Yes, injector o rings can cause what you had happening, i just wanted to rule out a weak low pressure oil pump before we started looking at other things.

No I wasn't aware of that. I have only remove 2 injector so far, but it is probalbly already to late since that was yesterday evening. Okay so what is the proper procedure for removing and installing injectors?

there are four total plugs in the cylender heads under the valve cover. They are between the front two, and the back two incectors. If you have already removed injectors you need to stop after all the injectors are out, PM me your phone number and a convenient time to call, and i will help you with the procedure for getting the oil out of the cylenders safely with you......

OK update. I replaced all 8 of the injectors O-Rings. The truck now runs like a top.
