Last night when around a turn got on it alittle had 5-8 lbs of boost and then bang, lost boost and white smoke out the exhaust, took intercooler pipe and air intake off and compressor wheel is intact and spins but had oil all over it. truck makes a horrible metal grinding noise like something in the turbo is broke and bouncing around. would it be a bearing, broken shaft or maybe a unison ring broke?? just looking for some help, truck is80% tore down already
Good possibilities don't here much about shafts breaking but it could be might as well dig in pull it out and check it out. I had my stock charger break a vein off I got lucky it didn't hit the turbine.
yea its not a blown boot, the noise was god awful like something spinning out of blance inside the turbo. but why would it go out all of sudden, its a reman turbo, and it was put on before i bought the truck a year and 7 days ago!? i got my hands on a 03 to put back in though for $300 bucks!!
well im into futher now and gotthe downpipe apart its black if i put my fingers in there. i cant get the oil feed tube off at the bottom. but it seems like it wasnt feeding it oil, im having trouble breaking loos the clamp behind the turbo!!!
is the orings for the oil feed and drain tube the same for a 03 turb? im replacing my 06 turbo with an 03, and didnt knw if there was a difference in the gasket and seals for the oil feed and drain tubes.
its the same. when you put the up pipes back on put the clamp on the other way so that you can use a socket and extension from the front. I also know alot of people that leave that back bolt out.
ok thanks a ton guys!!!! hoping to get the turbo out tonight. gotta order the updated oil feed and drain tubes and a mounting kit as well!! plus lots of oil so i can flush the metal shavings out!
Late to the party, but what you described sounds like what happened when the shaft connecting the 2 sides of the turbo snapped on my previous truck. Got on it coming out of a parking lot, started to build boost and then a bang followed by a lot of metallic rattling and no power.
Haze! thats exactly what happened! got the turbo out last night compressor side is ok, but exhaust side is screwed!! waiting on updated oil feed and drain tubes now, should be here friday, then ill be able to put it back together!!!
well i got the turbo in and truck fired up but didnt get any boost, it sat all week withone of the batteries disconnected, so i got it started and took it down the road, i would build about 2 lbs of boost. the vgt display on the edge showed the percentage changing. so i parked it and was layin in bed, and thought did i take the rag out of the intercooler inlet!?!? sure enough went out and i didnt so now i wonder if that was the problem!
was the rag the problem? which side was the rag in. I might have the same thing going on
