I met Colin Edwards years ago at club races at local tracks here in Texas. He was just a kid and had just earned his first professional ride with Yamaha He hasn't looked back since. He has won numerous AMA championships as well as others like the World Superbike title. He's now chasing the biggest crown in motorcycling, the MotoGP title. Check out this little gem of footage.:thumb:
Colin is an amazing rider, shame he's not with a factory team this year. Is he even riding MotoGP this year? Didn't see him at the last race yesterday :dunno:.
I know he lost his factory Yamaha ride next to Valentino, but I thought he got a ride with a satellite Yamaha team.
I have to say that was one hell of a save 30% skill 70% luck. My buddy raced against Colin back in the early 90's down in Daytona when he was a club racer and hadn't even turned expert, my buddy lead the whole race by about half a lap, on the last lap Colin came out of no where and smoked them all to win. He is amazing but Nicky Hayden imo is still better!!
Better?? Maybe.. Younger?? Definately.:hehe:
It almost seemed like Colin was going to steam roll the world back in his WSB days. Second in the championship in 99. Won it in 2000. Second again in 01 and won again in 02. Plus he won a couple of notable events like the 8 hours of Suzuka endurance.
Then for some crazy reason, after winning Honda the freaking World Championship, they dropped him. The entire world's jaws dropped. That was the biggest slap in the face I've ever seen from any professional sponsor. The reigning world champion with no job.:dunno: It was either take the year off or accept the only offer that was out there on the far inferior Cube3 Aprilia prototype. He's definately had rough times since then. For some reason, the Japanese teams(especially Honda) like to "sideline" American riders. It's been blatantly evident with Hayden too. They give Nicky all the "test equipment" to race on to develope, then hand the finished product to Pedrosa. In 04, on the Telefonica team, Colin got hand-me-down parts from Honda while Gibernau got parts equivelent to Rossi's team ride. A rider's skill can only overcome so much. I wish he would of taken the ride with Suzuki with Hopper back when he went with Honda the last time. Suzuki at least values their riders and would of given him whatever they had. I'll get off my soap box.:hehe:
They'd still be scraping me off the track.
He's damn sure got skill.
