I'm not sure on the SD's, but there should only be one relay. A glow plug controller is like th ones on old 7.3 IDI, that is a relay and has a circuit to control the length of time the glow plugs are on. In the newer trucks, the glow plugs are controlled by the PCM.
Here is a pic of the items in question. In the pic, left would be towards the cab and right is towards the front (grill). Are they both glow plug relays? If not, which one is, and what is the other one?
The relay with the brown wire and the yellow wire on the same terminal is your glow plug relay. The other relay is the manifold air heater relay. Not sure which is on the left or right. I can't see the wires going to the relay.
ok guys, here's another one for you. I was talking to the diesel mech here at the Ford dealership (he's the one that helped me on my truck when the injector went out, scanned and troubleshoot off the books). I was complaining to him about the hard starting I have with the baby in the morning. Before I changed the injector, the motor would turn about 2-3 times and fire right off. After I did the injector, it takes about 5-6 turns before it fires. She doesn't run funny, but it seems I need to plug the truck in anytime it's about 38 degrees or lower. He suggested I needed a new GP Relay (that's what prompted the thread). Could a bad relay cause this? I need some opinions before I spend 65.00 @ Autozone or 48.00 at Central Truck &B Trailer.
yep the relay's are know for going bad.... but its could also be the glow plugs.... or if this started right after they did the injectors, then it could be that they forgot to plug in a few of the glow plugs....
I did the injectors. Just to make sure there weren't any issues with the new injector, I took it to the dealership again to have the buzz test done. The one we replaced did buzz as loud as the others. If I did forget to plug one of the injectors back in, would it still pass a buzz test? I was thinking about buying a new relay off of Ebay (go for $28.00 shipped and 1 yr warranty) just to see if it would help. Is there a way to test the glow plugs to see if I'm having issues with them firing off?
No, I said you may not have plugged in a few of the GLOW PLUGS.... but yes the injectors would fail the buzz test if they were not plugged in.... and you would have a miss in the motor...
It sure is. I have been printing any info I can find that might be helpful to create a book of tech info. Thanks again for the help.
