Try and look up your specs online. There are places where you can type in your vin number and it'll give you all the gvwr's and such on your truck. I see your in MN. Just remember if oyu start towing something heavy soon, road restrictions are gonna come on here and a couple of weeks if we get warm weather. So the commercial vehicle inspectors are gonna be out weighing in full force and you don't want to be caught overweight.
Another consideration: If you are towing anything in a "commercial" capacity, you will fall under federal motor carrier rules and regulations regardless of which state you are in. Once you get to 14,001 and up in weight, you are required to have a CDL regardless of vehicle configuration. Not from a law standpoint, but you need to stay within your truck/trailer weight rating, if for nothing else.....SAFETY......not only yourself but everyone else on the road.
Are you sure about the 14k rule on the cdl? Or are you talking a class c? Cause the cut off for non-cdl to class B single vehicle is 26,000. Anything above that is a class B and any combo over 33,000 is a class A. But you are right about the safety issue. Don't ever overload your truck if you can help it. If you did get in an accident and the DOT put your weights together, you could be in some big trouble.
In Minnesota you can haul up to 26,000 lbs (this is by the GVWR in the door not what you actually weigh) with out having to DOT your truck and trailer. If you leave the state you must be less than 10,000 lbs GVWR with out DOT inspections.
Also your regular license allows you single or combinations up to 26,000 lbs
I know this is not exactly what you were asking but it seemed related to the responses that you were getting.
There should be a rating on your hitch or ball as to how much you can tow.
Hope this helps!
I HAVE A 97 FLAT BED 350. I HAVE HAD COMPANY TRUCKS TRAVEL NATION WIDE AT AND OVER 26,000 GCVW. I RECENTLY HAD 15,000 LBS BEHIND MY FLAT BED AND IT PULLED 50+ MPH OVER SOME MODERATE HILLS WITH OUT DOWN SHIFTING THE AUTOMATIC OR SLIPPING THE TORQUE CONVERTER. THESE TRUCKS WILL PULL ALOT IF YOU ARE GENTLE.
I BORROWED A FRIENDS 6.0 WITH A 10 TON GOOSE NECK AND PULLED A CASE 580 BACK HOE AT 70+ MPH FOR 400 MILES WITH NO ENGINE TEMP OR TRANNYT TEMP RISE.
