So I have a few nasty oil leaks on my 02 f350 7.3 auto.... I found a ford diesel mechanic that will pull my motor for 500 bucks. The other day he showed me a parts list that he came up with for the tune of 250$. Seems reasonable. That was with all the seals for the motor I believe. The motor only has 104,xxx miles. Is there anything else I should replace while the motor is out?
I yanked the engine out of my OBS a couple months ago, and just got it back up and running a few weeks ago. I think i had over $250 in seals/gaskets, and something like $600 total in parts, not counting the $700 i spent for an engine. But the only things i didn't touch were the headgaskets and rear main, and i replaced some stock parts with aftermarket stuff.
I wouldn't jump the gun on this. Dig into your leaks before you pull the motor.
1. Dont need to pull it for your leaks unless your pan is rusty
2. Even if $500 is a lot to you, you might stir up other issues by pulling
3. At that low of miles, more than likely its something else
For example, my 7.3 had the PCV stick. Turned everything into an oil bath. The $5 part that failed made the turbo boots leak all over the place then the oil traveled around the motor looking like other stuff was leaking bad.
The pan is leaking. After buying the truck I realized they had cut the crossmember out of the truck replace the oil pan I believe. They welded the crossmember back in and it was done very well however they used just regular rtv to seal it back up. 👎
I've had a few different shops look at it. I know for sure the oil pan, valve covers, oil cooler, and the dip stick on the side of the pan are all leaking.
