Is there anyway to remove the lifter without having to tear down the engine? Is it possible to get the lifter out throught the pushrod hole with a strong magnet?
Best I can remember there is a retaining plate that holds a pair of lifters straight and I think it can be left in place and the lifters pulled right out of it. I’ll have to look at my engine pics to jog my memory. There are lots of engine pic from my rebuild in my sig link if it helps you any. Here is a pic of the plates still in place with lifters removed Shutterfly | Slideshow
Why do you need to remove a lifter with the engine together?
I think one was crushed when my engine ran away. One of the rocker-arms is loose even thought it's bolts or fully down. We tried another rocker arm and it is loose as well. We're thinking that the lifter may have been crushed.
We tried pulling the lifter out using a magnet, but it kept getting stuck and falling off of the magnet. If I can avoid it, I'd like to not spend 10+ hrs taking the motor apart just replace an $18 lifter.
Sorry man, that sucks, as best I can remember they just pull right out but a strong magnet would be needed, if it is crushed there might be some shrapnel in there so be careful to make sure everything comes out.
Scuffy had a motor that had a lifter issue. We looked at trying to get them out but had to pull the head. I'm not saying that maybe in one year it may have been different in the heads but I dont think you can on any of them.
On my 96, had to pull a head due to valve train issues when I bought it, was a pain, but can be done. On a Super Duty (99-03) it may be next to impossible
Do I need a lifter extractor tool? I can't find one anywhere. :dunno:
