New to this site. Looks like a great place for valuable info. Anyways, dealer said I have oil leaking from the bedplates of my 05 powerstroke and they have to pull the motor. :( What exactly are bedplates? I figure if they are pulling the motor I might as well have them install beefer head bolts. Any suggestions to which brand? Thanks, Mike

:ORG welcome:

Got me on the "bedplates"....but as for headstuds, most people go with the ARPs unless you want spend the extra loot and get the H-11s.

Hopefully one of our Techs will be along to help ya some more. :thumb:

There are studs that cost even more.
I thought the ARP's were expensive. That's what I love about this site. You learn something new everyday.

A bed plate is an aluminum tray with holes that bolts to your engine girdle. Then your oil pan bolts to that. Not sure why it would be leaking though. They pull the engine because the cannot remove the oil pan or bed plate because of frame restrictions. This fix will not require removing your heads, so if you want studs, you might have to pay the tech for that. ARP works great. If they agree to the studs, make sure they know that the torquing is different than stock bolts.

thats not the bedplate. The bedplate is the steel portion above what you posted.... It is sealed by two...long strait o rings. The bedplate is also the main bearing caps as well as being a very important structural piece of the motor. The bed plate is cast iron and wieghs about 50 poinds.....its what holds the crank in place.....

Thanks for the replys! I figured I would shell out the extra coin to have the hold bolts changed while the motor was out. My truck doesn't have any performance mods yet, but I thought it might be a good idea to have them (head bolts) replaced since it seems a lot of folks are having issues with them stretching.

Its even possible to stretch a bolt on a completely stock 6.0L... My buddy just did it with his work truck, 04 350 cab & chassis pulls a 12k trailer everyday. Last year his EGR cooler went, this year the gaskets... I were you I'd go with the ARP studs, they're not as strong as H11 and cannot be re-used like H11 but for 98% of the trucks out there, they're all you'll ever need. Even if it costs you some labor and a new pair of head gaskets, I'd spring for it in a heartbeat since you've already got the motor out!

i honestly dont know what you would call it to be honest......

When i do shortblocks and bedplates and replace that gasket we always just call it the upper oil pan....but since it isnt a pan at all....thats not the correct termanology...i honestly dont know what the correct term for that is.....

Maybe the pickup tube housing...IDK...:dunno:

I will definately look into the ARP studs. I just hope the techs at my local dealership will put the motor back in "as good or better" than it is now. I know the engine compartment is'nt the most sightly, but it should look factory when complete. My buddy had a motor replaced and it looked like crud when the the job was done.
