let me see if i can sum it up.i have a 2000 F-450 with 162,000 miles on it. i dont drive it but my workers do everyday. They been telling me its hard to start when its cold and smokes alot, but when it does finally run it runs rough.so i figured it could be the glow plugs, so put new glow plugs in it, i could not put gp relay cause they had to order it. i tried to start it after gp install but still very hard to start. so i finaaly got it running and it smoked like crazy and idle rough and missed . I noticed it has alot of blow by, meaning i took of the oil fill top and it smokes and blows air out of oil fill tube and also on the dipstick tube. Does it sound like the motor is shot or what?
inspect the air filter housing, particularly the tabs right by the fender and the tab that the hold down clip towards the front (towards the grill) go to.....see if there is any damage....then pull the lid and all the ductwork off and inspect for any dirt...anywere in the tubing......also, check the turbo fins for any signs of damage. They should be smoothe with nothing looking like chips, dings, or serrations....
Some smoke out of the cap doesnt worry me too much as long as it doesnt push back when you put your hand over and plug the hole with it....try that....
Also, when you put glow plugs in it, did you check the harnesses to see if they were coming loose and such, they are also a common problem.....
i think you should get the glow plugs to work first.try jumping the relay for a few seconds and crank it and see what happens.it will smoke if glow plugs are not working.
marc, the lid to the airbox looks ok, but the tabs on th box are broke. When i pulled the ic piping off the drivers side the peice of black hose the has the vent from the valve cover and then clamps ontothe turbo, it has alot of dirt piled up right where to tubes from the valve cover comes back in to the piping.
first off, see if that smoke blowing out of the oil cap pushes back against your hand, secondly, check the turbo compressor wheel fins for damage....
If either look bad, you can probably figure on a dusted motor due to dirt ingestion. After you get done beating your employees, you will need a long block and possibly a turbo or at minimum a compressor wheel and a motor...
I would HIGHLY suggest a ford AIS air filte kit for this truck after it is fixed...sorry for the bad news man
marc, not sure really what you mean by push back against my hand but it is blowing out the oil fill tube.I can put my hand on top of it and i can feel it pretty noticable. it has more blowing out (pressure) at idle then it does when you give it some rpm's. ye the probably toasted the motor. do you know of a good place to find a long block on the net
Well took it to the ford place and let them pull codes and the guy said it had some ipc codes or something to that nature, then he looked at the turbo fins and said my motor was dusted. they had about 1/8 gap around the edges.Does anybody know who remans the motor for ford? i called yesterday and they can get a reman running engine.
Thanks Marc. What do you think is the best way to go? The ford place cant tell me much about theirs. I want to know does it comeplete with everything like flywheel, manifolds and all. 'm looking drop in motor, wire it up and go.Also what does GPD stand for
GPD is genuine parts distributors. You can not buy directly from them. They sell to ford and now are authorized to sell to autozone...they are a reman company. You can not buy a complete drop in. You will need to buy a long block and turbo to fix your problem. You will put the exhaust manifolds, turbo(new one), turbo manifold, an Y pipe off of yours on the new one. Replacing the Y pipe tubes and donuts would be advisable too....
if they can, more power to them. Last time i priced out a dusted motor we couldnt...but maybe your parts guy knows a basic that mine doesnt..
