Need to change oil what kind of oil and what weight 15-40 or somthing better and do I fill the new oil where the filter goes thanks

ya i use rotella oil 15-40 but make sure when you take that huge filter off, you put oil in the new filter prior to putting it back on your truck. good luck bud :)

oh lol i'm like border-line retarded when it comes to paying attention haha. oops. i haven't changed the oil in my 6.0 yet either

Myself I use Rotella 5/40 Synthetic. It gets cold in the north country and it gave me a 1MPG gain year round. I just change every 4-5K or it gets black. I found faster oil pressure and less rattle. Just my experience, but I had tried Delo, Mobile, and regular Rotella.

Rotella 15W-40 here....so far no complaints.

Motorcraft filters too by the way.

Thanks for the info guys I just did it and was really tripping on the almost 4 gallons of oil going in there and I also forgot to pre soak the filter with oil but it should be alright. Right ?

I'm pretty sure you don't need to pre soak the oil filter so you'll be good.

Any good 15w40 oil like Rotella, Castrol or Delo will be good. I recently started using a 5w40 oil for the winter and it makes a huge difference in how the truck starts and runs in cold weather. Your oil filter is located on top of the motor in the center just behind the fan shroud. It takes a 35mm socket to remove the cap. Only use the Motorcraft FL-2016 filter in these engines. They can be had at Wal Mart for a decent price.

You can't pre fill the filter chamber since it drains to the pan when the lid is open. Pour all the oil you want it's not going to stay there. As far as presoaking the filter, I don't see the benefit to that since as soon as oil hits the filter it will keep moving through it anyway. It takes about 20 seconds to fill the filter and have good oil pressure on startup. I hate to see that, but with no load on the engine it's not that big of a deal according to the engineers. It would be different if you were starting a freshly built engine and couldn't get pressure for a few seconds.

Whatever you do, don't buy into the 10,000 mile or more extended oil change intervals on this engine. The HEUI fuel system reaks havoc on oil and unless you only travel on the highway for hundereds of miles per startup you just can't stretch out the oil change on the 6.0 engine.

Could you please explain that some more? I'm due for my first oil change soon, and I'm planing on using 15w40 Amsoil. I'm not going to extend the change intervals to 25,000 miles like amsoil recommends, but I was hoping to go a little longer then the gas engines I'm used to.

I heard a rumor about Rotella could hurt the injectors over time with all the solvents it has in it..
I am going to raise the BS flag on that one. There is too much evidence to the contrary. ( I have run it for years, not to mention the thousands of others )
Not rumors. I do not have a Rotella MSDS sheet handy, if you find actual evindence I will stand corrected!

Well, so far, I've had two oil analysis done by very reputable labs, and had a professional interpretation done. One was with standard motorcraft 15/40 and the second was with Amsoil 15/40 synthetic. Both samples were taken at 7500 mile intervals, both times the analysis has shown the oil to be sheared down to 30 weight oil and in need of change. The TBN of the Amsoil was better, and it still provides good cold starting, and the EAO oil filter works very well, but over all the oil just can't keep up with the beating the HEUI injection system puts on it. Basically, your engine oil is being asked to lubricate, clean, cool, and pressurize your injection system at 3000 psi or so. Even the AmSoil does not fair well based on independent lab results. Personally I'll stick with some sort of synthetic just for the cold start benifits and that it's much quieter with synthetic, and the oil has better heat dispersion characteristics, but thats it. It does not appear that you can go with extended drain intervals on these engines, no matter what type of oil you use.

There is no doubt that the 6.0L has a lot of shear in the engine oil. And that timely oil change intervals are critical to engine longevity.
If my injectors head south the it will be time for an upgrade. :woot:

Just an FYI.

Here's a bit of info I just learned at the dealership researching the ESP and thought I'd share.

Oil with a grade of CJ-4 MUST be used and changed every 7500 for the ESP to be valid!

I don't know what CJ-4 stands for but I know it's in the Rotella Triple Protection and not in the regular Rotella. I just changed my oil twenty minutes ago and read it right of the bottle.:givemebeer:
