Air filters

Need alittle help. Just found the site and was reading some entries about after market filters. I have a 01, 7.3 4x4 Duelly. I added the Banks 4" exhust with their Power elbow. I also added, just the K&N drop in air filter and cut out a small area in the grill to allow more air in. All this because I heard that diesels run better when more air in, more air out makes it run better. Now I have read that the K&N filters are killing my engine. What air system do I go with???? Thanks

The problem with K&N is not necessarily filtration, but rather the fit of the drop in filters. AFE does have better filtration than K&N, but the K&N will do fine if you can guarantee a good seal. Most people overlook the part of the installation instructions that say to use the white grease on the sealing surfaces of the filter. I have used K&N drop ins on two Toyota vehicles for a total of 150000 miles and never had any issues with any light dusting in the intake tract. These big diesels draw a lot more air with more force than a naturally aspirated engine so it becomes more crititcal.

Honestly on a 7.3 any drop in filter is a waste of money because the airbox is pathetic on them. For a little more money you could get a decent intake or just go with the 6637 Tymar do it yourself setup.

Thumbs up for the filter change

I have a 99 dually and I changed mine to the Napa filter. I've been real happy with it and I know it's not letting in anything. The one thing I did was when I got it all installed I got some heavy wide tape and went around the connections just to insure there wasn't anyway dirt would get in. I didn't use duck tape as it's nasty to get off and makes a sticky mess. The big round filter lets the air in and it sure made a dfference. Just my 2 cents worth and I hope this helps. There are a lot of trucks set up this way and the drivers are happy. Good luck!!!!!
