I have an 03 F250 6.0L. After replacing the stock exhaust with a 4" turbo back exhaust the check engine light came on while towing my 5th wheel also suffered power loss. I was able to reset the light when not towing, runs great. Took it in for recall # 06E17, since then I can't reset the check engine light, still have loss of power and exhaust does not sound the same. Dealer said the 4" exhaust was the problem code P0401. Anyone know what's going on?
All diesel engines are compression ignition.
:buttkick:
I'm sure you mis spoke there. The backpressure is the issue. Some believe (and the dealers are those "some") that backpressure in the exhaust is needed on the 6.0 for some reason.
Others say this isn't true.
I intstalled a 4' downpipe to a 5' and was told to leave my cat on for someback pressure and that was from several differnet mechanics and the shop that sold me my exhaust. The 6.0 is supposed to have a little backpressure to work right. I left mine on and haven't had a problem.
This really sucks cause I was going to do a 4" exhaust soon without the CAt and a magnaflow muffler. I am not sure it's worth it in the sense of letting the motor breath better if i can't get rid of the CAT.
Am I wrong here. Is it still advantageous to run a larger (4") pipe with a hight flow muffle and a CAT? Will i still see increased spoolup times and lower EGTs? Maybe I could gut half the CAT...
with the latest programming you got, your truck is using Baro readings (mass air flow sensor) and also putting EGR in at idle. This is why you are getting the CEL. With extra air flow (open air filter) or lack of backpressure (open exhaust) it is getting pretty common to see a CEL on these trucks with the latest programming that cant really be fixed. Contrary to what almost everyone in this thread has said, the 6.0 DOES need some backpressure, particularly at idle to keep the EGR flowing. Putting a muffler on that truck that is just a little restrictive could help, or putting the CAT back on as harald sait would probably fix it as well. If you have an open air filter, putting the stock one back in could be worth a try as well.......
The other thing to give a shot would be allowing the turbo to re learn stratagy if it can. This is what the exhaust is preventing. Disconnect the battery cables for MIN 1 hour......hook them back up and start the truck. Let it idle for a minimum of 5 minutes, then go out and drive it for about ten miles and see if that keeps the light off....

So if i ran a 4" exhaust, no cat and a magna flow muffler with an edge juice tuner (someday soon) - and I already have an airaid cold air intake, I'm probably looking to have this same issue UNLESS i can teach that turbo?
I thought i would have to open up the exhaust (by deleting the cat) if i wanted to use the high end tunes of the edge juice?? I'm so confused about what to do! :help:
Is there any real advantage as far as lowering EGT if i go 4" and KEEP the cat and maybe use a magnaflow? Doesn' the cat keep it from breathing better?

all your theory is correct, and weather your truck will do it or not is a gamble. Some do, some dont, and if you dont have the latest programming, it wont for sure. That said, you would be foolish not to put the latest programming in if it is ever an issue (usually its done when you have to take it in for a problem unless you have a recall open). Its kind of a gray area as far as how much you can do. A four inch definatley is better than a 5 inch as far as this particular issue goes, but its still a gamble. With the muffler that will help a bit though....

Just bought the K&N Performance kit yesterday. Will this alone adversely effect my power? If so I'll take it back.

I ran away from the K&N after reading a few posts and marc tellin me how many eng. replacements his shop has done that were running K&N. I think you can do the BHAF mod on your truck just like i did mine but don't quote me on that.

I think someone's pulling your leg i own a 6.0 late 03 early 04 and i got 4in exshaust and a big chip and i never had a engine light come on-only when a sensor failed. Diesels don't run off back pressure, they run on compression. I work on diesels for a living. The back pressure neede is done through the down pipe.

that is not true on a 6.0. Backpressure is needed to allow EGR flow.......
Its not an issue if you dont have the latest programming at all, since EGR flow isnt allowed at idle and MAP sensor readings also arent used at idle, but the latest programmig uses both which can cause problems with exhaust or open air filters.......
I agree with Marc i had an early 04 f250 with 6.0 had 4 inch down pipe with 5 inch back with a high flow muffler!THe check engine lite will come on if you have the latest computer tuning! Also i put back on the factory intake and it helped a little but the best thing to do on there truck is a 4 inch with cat and muffler and also a intake and your choice of programmer! The 4 inch still sounds good but the 5 inch sounds like a 747 jet takeing off!
My engine light just came on last week. I did put on a Magna flow exhaust 4" and removed the Cat.Converter; straight pipe to the rear. I also installed an AFE air intake. The truck runs great. If I am getting this right. The engine light is most likely due to not enough back pressure from the mods I did? And, the only thing I can do is put on a cat. converter?
