Average boost PSI ?

This may be a dumb question but here it goes.

How much boost should I see on average.

My 01 PSD (see below for details on mods) seems to have a low boost psi. I use my Juice Monitor as the guage and rarely see over 12lbs boost. I usually leave it on step#3 my option are 0-stock 1-economy 2-towing 3-drive 4-race 5-extreme(I think). If I am accelerating to get the freeway I see 8-10 psi. I really have to get on it to see over 15 psi boost on #3 setting.

Several or my friends own PSD but none have boost guages, My friends with boost guages either have Cummins or Duramax. They actually made a comment on a hunting trip the other day that my boost looks way too low.

You should be seeing more than that. My 99.5 i sold, had the Juice w/ attitude and Evo and i could easily see 20psi on an average launch. But really step into her, i'd see 28-30 psi. But on occasion, my gage would screw up and it would read 10 psi more than normal. Check your MAP sensor and even your waste gate. I had close to the same mods, DIY intake, wicked wheel, 4 in turbo back MBRP.

That sounds like 100% stock numbers to me. You could have a leak between the turbo and head robbing your boost. I had this on a 3406E Cat in a wrecker and it was very hard to find it as you need load to make boost and reproduce to find a leak. I ended up building plugs out of PVC pipe then used a compressor to add air and found a pin hole in a hose. That little pin hole was robbing almost 15lbs of my 35lbs of boost. Maybe someone hear has a better test than I came up with.

I'm lucky to see 17 psi running my off road tune in my intercooled 97 f-350 with k&n intake and 3" down pipe to a 4" straight exhaust i have to be rolling down the highway and lay into it i just got the truck 2 weeks ago so i'm not sure if thats what i should be getting but i hope that helps

I just got a 01 f350 pretty much stock with a 70hp superchips. I checked my boost guage and it seems to be accurate. But going down the road just crusing no boost or mabey a 1lb or 2. If I lean on the throttle from a stop or even going down the road to pass I get around 5-8lbs. Stuff it to the floor or even with 10,000lbs on a trailer I never see much over 10-12lbs. I checked all the clamps and they seem to be tight. This is my first powerstroke and I don't know if I'm laking power or not. There never seems to be any smoke out the back like it is starving for air. Any comments on this would be great. I don't honestly know if I have a problem leaking or wastegate problem. It is driving me nuts listening to you guys talk about 20 plus psi. Thanks in advance.

You need to make some pvc pipe and caps, one for where it comes off the turbo and one for the motor end. Drill a hole in one of the pvc caps and put a tire valve stem in it so you can air it up with a compressor, don't put aver like 30psi. Now you should be able to hear it and feel it with your hand with the motor off. At truck shops they sometimes add smoke inside so you can even see it.

If that checks out, and assuming your air filter and exhaust are not restricted with soot or dirt you may have a waste gate or turbo problem.

The alternative is that you have leaking uppipe gaskets and loosing exhaust drive pressure to the turbo. Check the firewall for black soot marks or have someone hit the throttle while you watch for exhaust leaks at the turbo inlet y adaptor where the uppipes join to it. You may have to carefully run your hand around the joints to feel for the exhaust leak. Just don't burn yourself.

Uppipe gasket failure is very common on the PSDs. There are updated uppipe sets availiable from International that employ bellows that eliminate the uppipe gaskets. Black Widow Diesel also sells these bellows style uppipe kits either stock International or ceramic coated for the Super Dutys not badly priced considering it eliminates the uppipe gasket/uppipe replacement chore. The part number for the OBS engine is 1843486C92 from IH, just don't choke when they tell you the price. I got a OBS set off of ebay real cheap.

Another thing is the black solenoid valve that mounts to the intake compressor adaptor (y-adaptor) and is part of the wastegate control piping. If it goes bad then you loose boost through the wastegate. That happened to one of my buddys whe he lost boost.
